Water Leaks Drive Up Rio Rancho Bills and Repairs
Rio Rancho faces rising water service line leaks with CH2MHill analysis showing about 300 more leaks per year in 2010 and 2011. From 2007 through 2011 there were 3 914 leaks, 1 904 of which occurred in 2010 2011. Utilities officials estimate 559 million gallons, 12.6 percent of water pumped in 2011, go unaccounted for due to leaks and other losses. A full time crew with copper replacements would cost about 1.4 million dollars annually to fix 1 000 lines per year, funded by a rate increase of roughly 3.65 dollars per month per customer.
