Soviet goods bring glasnost home to Rio Rancho couple
Rio Rancho residents Larry and Shelley Ginsberg run Specialties of the Seven Seas at Classic Century Square in Albuquerque importing Russian items via relatives in Baku. Through an import agent they trade hard Rock Cafe T-shirts, Red Army watches, khokshama wooden pottery, matryoshka dolls, and handmade goods for American items, with shipments often taking months. Their aim is to expand imports to include candy and records as they grow their business and possibly open a dedicated import store. They report visitors from across New Mexico and neighboring states and offer mail orders. the couple moved from Pennsylvania to Rio Rancho in 1983 and have two young children.

Wineries pour it on at Bernalillo festival
The second annual New Mexico Wine Festival at Bernalillo drew 15 NM wineries and local craftspeople from Bernalillo and nearby areas. Organizers said the fundraiser benefited the New Mexico Wine Society and Bernalillo Main Street, with a $14,000 grant from the Department of Economic Growth and Tourism to boost tourism. Wine making in Bernalillo traces to Franciscan priests around 1662 and Christian Brothers produced much of the state’s sacramental wines into the 1950s.
