Night Under the Skies fundraiser planned in Rio Rancho

The Rio Rancho Astronomical Society hosts its sixth annual Night Under the Skies on Saturday Sept. 10 from 4 to 11 p.m. at Rainbow Park Observatory behind Rainbow Pool off Southern Boulevard. G. B. Cornucopia will discuss archaeoastronomy in Chaco Canyon. Literacy volunteers sought for ReadWest programs

The ReadWest adult literacy program seeks volunteers with no teaching experience to assist learners in English reading speaking and writing. Training includes a free two day ESL tutor course and a one day basic literacy tutor course. Orientation sessions are Sept 15 and Oct 20 with tutor trainings Sept 17 and 24 and Oct 22. Romero trial set to start Tuesday

Rio Rancho bond passes 3-1 to fund schools and upgrades

Rio Rancho Public Schools voters approve a 60 million dollar general obligation bond by a 75 percent majority. The plan funds technology upgrades security improvements a new Joe Harris Elementary School and a new Shining Stars Preschool building with funds allocated over four years. The district will use 24.5 million for Joe Harris Elementary and 15.5 million for the preschool project with location planned west of Unser Boulevard and south of Northern Boulevard. Superintendent Sue Cleveland applauded the community and stated the bond will support safe well maintained buildings and access to state of the art technology. The election results list 2 567 votes for and 831 against with funds to be issued gradually.

Grand jury indicts Sandoval County Commissioner James Dominguez

A Sandoval County grand jury indicted Commissioner James Dominguez on two felony false imprisonment counts and multiple misdemeanor charges from a November incident with his estranged wife Guadalupe Lulu Reyes. The case cites false imprisonment, battery, interference with communications, assault, reckless driving, and a restraining order violation.

Rio Rancho councilor found guilty of false police report

A six member jury in Sandoval County Magistrate Court found Rio Rancho City Councilor David Bency guilty of filing a false police report. The verdict came after about 80 minutes of deliberation with sentencing pending.

Jerry Schalow named president of Rio Rancho Chamber

Jerry Schalow has been named president and chief executive officer of the Rio Rancho Regional Chamber of Commerce. He brings more than two decades of NM and Southwest experience, most recently as president of First Santa Fe Insurance Services. Erin Hagenow remains interim director through Sept 30 to aid the transition.
