County adopts three level suicide prevention plan at detention center
Sandoval County approves new policies to prevent death by own action at the county detention center. Detention Director Al Casamento says three risk levels replace the old watch system, with highest level under constant supervision and second level on 15 minute watch in a prevention cell. Inmates in higher levels are disarmed of razors and fed on a Styrofoam container, while death by own action smocks and blankets replace standard clothing. All inmates are evaluated every 24 to 48 hours by mental health staff, and those at high risk may be hospital evaluated or sign a refusal form. Casamento notes about two inmates are on suicide watch daily, with ongoing policy reviews planned.
