Funding cuts threaten DWI programs statewide

Observer staff writer Zita Fletcher reports that more than 150 people statewide could lose their jobs due to budget cuts to DWI programs. Diane Irwin of Sandoval County DWI & Prevention warns that over half of 212 full time, 56 part time, and 64 contractors may be eliminated, endangering probation supervision, treatment, and school prevention efforts. The LDWI fund and county revenues fund these programs, but recent cuts halve funding and jeopardize public safety and ongoing drug abuse education.
