A cloud of smoke covered Rio Rancho and the West Side Wednesday and Thursday due to a 6,000 acre controlled burn in the Jemez Mountains The precribed burn was to end today according to the Department of Public Safety no health related calls were reported from the smoke
The Sandoval County Cooperative Extension Service hosts an annual decorated pumpkin contest on Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian Family Healthcare Center in Rio Rancho. Free for all ages, entrants bring pumpkins pre-decorated or carved to 4100 High Resort Blvd. Registration starts at 2 p.m. and judging follows at 2:30. Small cash prizes awarded by age, plus a largest home grown pumpkin prize. sponsors are Sandoval County Extension Service and Rio Rancho Lions Club. For info call 867-2582.
Dracula the Prince of Darkness teams with United Blood Services for a blood drive this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the New Mexico Ballet Company and Academy, 4200 Wyoming NE. The City Council approved an overlay zone for the Pine Ridge Estates manufactured housing project to avoid the new housing design standards. Mayor Jennings cast the tie breaking vote amid concerns from some councilors about rushing decisions and local septic requirements.
As fall arrives and frost forms, local schoolchildren head to Wagner's Farm in Corrales for two field trips this week. Groups from Albuquerque Christian School and Wherry Elementary toured the pumpkin patch and apple picking areas with help from farm staff and smiling students and parents.
Rio Rancho élus approve the Recognition of Neighborhood Associations resolution sponsored by Councilors Kellogg and Bency and amend it to establish a City Hall mailbox pickup system. River's Edge One president Boulanger noted inclusion of homeowners and property owner groups, while residents pressed for better notification and reporting processes. About 17 associations exist in the city.
Intel honored several teachers for computer based lesson plans at an awards ceremony Tuesday night at Rio Rancho High School. Three Rio Rancho and one Moriarty educator were named for plans that integrate computing in class. Receivers include Mary Robinson for A Murder in Ramville and ARPS peers Matt Shappell and Dan Busse for The Great War An Oxymoron. The two remaining teachers will share the equipment.
Rio Rancho officials hold another Vision 2020 public forum this weekend at the Motor Vehicle Division facility on Sabana Grande Avenue and NM 528. The event includes morning open house discussions on growth trends and downtown and infill projects, plus an afternoon review of land use scenarios for five, 10, and 20 years with an economic analysis. Sponsored by the Vision 2020 Comprehensive Plan Committee and led by planning manager Steve Tollefson.
Rio Rancho officials report 48 resumes for the vacant administrator post as of Wednesday with applicants from New Mexico Texas Arizona and the East. The deadline remains open and interviews will be by invitation from Mayor Jennings and the city councilors.
