Rio Rancho Public Library hosts Teen Read Week with Terror Tales for Teens for grades 6 to 9 after hours on Oct 22 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Registration tops 40. Refreshments included.
The Rio Rancho Teen Court celebrated 25 teens who completed the program in the last six months at the Municipal Court complex on Oct. 6. Families attended as graduates received certificates of completion. Successful completion will dismiss charges with Juvenile Probation and Parole. participants must log community service hours complete educational programs and serve as jurors. For volunteers contact Cindy Johnson at 891-5995.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation will host an open house on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Albuquerque High School to present plans for reconstructing the I-25 and I-40 interchange. Participants can review project details and provide comments.
Rio Rancho High School will undergo an intensive spring review of its block scheduling plan as urged by Superintendent Dr. Sue Cleveland. The plan, adopted to let students take eight classes yearly with 90 minute periods, faces concerns about scheduling conflicts and potential delays in completing coursework. A private consultant will be hired next spring to assess alternatives and refine the approach.
Gheorghe Pachitu, 43, of 2215 Leonard SE, allegedly threatened his wife with a gun Thursday triggering an overnight standoff with Rio Rancho police. He was arrested at 6:30 a.m. Friday after tear gas forced him from the home. Detectives recovered handguns rifles and large amounts of ammunition during a Friday search. The wife called 911 and hung up at 3:45 p.m. Thursday after he pointed a rifle at her.
Rio Rancho Public Schools considering immediate termination for Shabbir Ahmed after an Aug. 23 incident in which a student was injured by toxic substances in a laptop screen during a computer repair class. An open hearing last week reviewed testimony from students, teachers, and Ahmed, with board decision set for Oct. 18. Ahmed argues the screen did not need touching and that glass would have to be broken intentionally to release toxins.
Rio Rancho Public Schools face a contract standstill as a new budgeting method shrinks funds. Superintendent Dr. Sue Cleveland says talks will resume in January after the Legislature may provide relief for districts hit hardest. The teachers union is involved and supportive as collective bargaining continues.
A Rio Rancho businessman questions city funded United Way signs, alleging ordinance violations. Scott Mahathey, a Farmers Insurance agent, noticed the red and white thermometer displays along NM 528 median and at the NM 528 and Southern Boulevard Walgreens site, featuring the United Way logo.
