County hosts first Collaboration Summit in Sandoval County

The Collaboration Summit brings local government leaders from 15 communities together with state lawmakers and tribal representatives at Club Rio Rancho this week to discuss economic development health services senior services transportation criminal justice and infrastructure. About 80 attendees are expected including six state legislators and tribal representatives with open access to the public.

Fallen officer Gregg Benner honored with balloon release

Gregg Benner, a Rio Rancho Police Officer, would not normally celebrate birthdays but agreed to for his 50th. His widow Julie Benner led more than 50 balloons in a public safety memorial on Pinetree Road on Thursday, honoring the late officer.

Rio Rancho considers city code of conduct ordinance

A city council special committee drafting a proposed code of conduct ordinance presents an initial draft amended after 10 meetings. The panel studied ethics board makeup complaint processes conflicts of interest and disclosures, harassment definitions, financial interest applicability to candidates, campaign funds, and an advisory handbook. The committee recommends applying the code to city officials and related processes.

Fifth grader raises funds for memorial hero fundraiser

Rio Rancho Elementary fifth grader R J Acosta chose fallen Rio Rancho Police Officer Gregg Benner for a class hero project. He is collecting donations for a permanent law enforcement memorial with jars at all city elementary schools Lincoln Middle School the district office and the transportation department. Donation jars carry a Benner note and ribbon and will be accepted until October 16 with a $1 000 goal.

Read Like a Lobo program inspires ARPS students

Rio Rancho Public Schools partners with the University of New Mexico to run Read Like a Lobo a reading contest for 10 elementary schools. The winning school gets 2000 dollars while top readers will be honored at a Nov 7 UNM game. Oct 3 to Oct 23 is the logging period with prizes like ice cream and pizza parties.
