Rio Rancho Woman Dies After Collision on NM528

A Rio Rancho woman, Elsie Currier, 77, died at UNM Hospital after a truck rammed the car she was in at the NM528 and Peggy Road intersection. Imogene Harris, 75, was critically injured. the driver of the truck, Bernie Zimmerman, 27, was uninjured. The crash occurred Monday afternoon. Harris remained in critical condition Monday evening.

Annexation talk shelved as Corrales council mulls roads

The Corrales council shunned annexation plans amid talk of a north-south road to secure grants. Councillor Dee Turner reported on her Rio Rancho presentation about the new road while Gentry said a committee would be appointed to study annexation.

Rio Rancho zoning board endorses subdivision plans north of city

The Rio Rancho Planning and Zoning Commission last week approved a 350 acre subdivision north of the city with seven residential blocks and a 83 acre commercial tract planned as a business park. Transition zoning was favored to provide developer flexibility while state and district engineers review the canal route alignment. A council resolution to prioritize the canal route and fund preliminary work drew debate over public input and timing. The Senior Citizens Center site was rezoned from Commercial to Agricultural near Bessom's Gardens as part of the action.

Sunrise Village Gets City Bond OK for 150-Unit Highrise

Rio Rancho council approves industrial development bonds for Sunrise Village on Meadowlark Lane. The project includes 150 units in phase one and its fire protection adequacy is questioned by residents. The council also creates a senior services coordinator position for Meadowlark Center and votes on clergy other city matters including deputy treasurer appointment, procurement code study, zoning change for The Islands, and energy conservation equipment for city hall.

CAP Plane Crash Injures Pilot and Wife Near Alameda

A Civil Air Patrol Beechcraft T-34 crashed east of Alameda Airport Friday afternoon, injuring pilot Reed Mulkey and his wife Anna. Reed remained in ICU with a broken leg and facial injuries, Anna in fair condition. both were moved to St. Joseph's in Albuquerque. Authorities and FAA investigators visited the site as CAP officials described the craft as aging but historically eventful in rescue work.
