Ferrara Wins County Sheriff Race in Bitter Contest
Incumbent Genara Ferrara, the lone Republican to weather a Democratic wave, defeated Dick Montoya 6 743 to 6 348 to win two more years as county sheriff. Ferrara swept Rio Rancho precincts, carried Cochiti Lake and Corrales, while Montoya claimed Torreon and Counselors areas and several Jemez Pueblo and Bernalillo precincts. Tragic Jeep Crash Claims 16-Year-Old Student Near Cibola High
A 16-year-old Cibola High School student died Monday when his jeep flipped off a dirt road near the mesa west of the school. A passenger, Travis Graham, 16, was hospitalized with facial and body injuries after being thrown from the vehicle. Police said the vehicle, traveling east at about 7:30 a.m., slid on pavement after leaving the dirt road and overturned. The victim died at the scene from massive head injuries. A second vehicle followed behind. neither occupant wore seat belts according to police. The victim’s name was being withheld pending next of kin notification.

County voters reject levy for indigent patient fund
Sandoval County voters on November 2 defeated a one tenth of a mill levy to fund indigent hospital claims, while approving Sunday alcohol sales. In statewide races, County favored Democrats with Jeff Bingaman, Bill Richardson, Toney Anaya, Mike Runnels, Clara Jones, Albert Romero, Earl Hartley, Paul Bardacke, Jim Baca and John Elliott winning by wide margins.
