World War I Vet Visits Rio Rancho for Veterans Day Parade

World War I veteran Glenn Morgensen visited Rio Rancho last week for an interview before heading to Veterans Hospital in Albuquerque for his twice weekly visits with disabled veterans like himself. He recalled his service in the Horsedrawn Artillery, injuries from a tree strike, and a life spanning Wright brothers to space shuttle era, noting the dwindling ranks of WWI veterans.

Rio Rancho and Bernalillo vie for same county land

Rio Rancho officials deliver a petition to the New Mexico Municipal Boundary Commission seeking annexation of about 12 000 acres near the NM 528 and NM 44 intersection, mostly northeast of the current city. Bernalillo officials expect petitions from landowners split by the bid, asking to join Bernalillo.

Former Sandoval official indicted for theft and forgery

Rosita Martinez, 49, a former Sandoval County purchasing agent, was indicted by a Bernalillo County grand jury on criminal solicitation, forgery, and fraud. The charges cover June 1983 to December 1984, involving checks to nonexistent or unpaid vendors and proceeds diverted to Martinez via Inez Maddalen. Counts allege embezzlement or fraud and forgery with losses over $20,000 and more than $2,500 in embezzlement. The indictment notes alleged cashing of forged or altered checks at First Interstate Bank and Moncor Bank, with total proceeds about $37,793.57.

Committee To Study Attorney Bids In Rio Rancho

A selection committee will meet this week to consider 10 proposals received last Friday for legal services. Mayor Richard S Wiles says bids were solicited after New Mexico Bateman Act rules required it. The 1984 Hatch and Beitler contract expired June 30 1985, prompting sealed proposals from Santa Fe firms and others for Rancho Doppler Aragon Aguilar Potter Kelley Barshow plus several Santa Fe firms. The committee includes Mayor Wiles Councilor Humphrey Councilor Burton purchasing agent Dean Culver and secretary Cheryl Veal. Culver notes about one third of bid specs typically yield actual proposals and 16 specs were sent for the legal contract, yielding about a 0.63 percent return. Proposals will be opened ranked and firms interviewed with page continuation on A1.

Arson Suspected in Villa Way Townhome Fire

Rio Rancho arson investigators suspect arson after a Saturday 2:23 a.m. blaze destroyed three townhouses under construction on Villa Way. Fire Chief Ernest Buckholz reported the fire defi nitely suspicious as 25 firefighters and seven volunteers fought the flames. Damages were estimated at 100000 to 115000 dollars. One firefighter injured stepping in a hole. Samples were sent to the state crime lab for accelerant analysis.
