Swihart Debuts in Boston as Red Sox Catcher at Fenway
Rio Rancho product Blake Swihart, 23, made his first major league appearance behind the plate for the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on May 2. The former Cleveland High School standout, who signed with Boston after graduation, started in relief of an injured catcher and collected his first MLB actions including a walk and a single while facing stars like Chase Headley and Alex Rodriguez. Swihart’s rise from Isotopes Park to the majors drew praise from Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez and local coaches who recalled his state title run and long road through Portland’s AA level.
