Rio Rancho High School graduates from the Class of 2005 organize a reunion weekend starting with a family tailgate at 5 p.m. Friday outside Rio Rancho Stadium, then a game attendance. Rio Rancho planners unveiled a four lane Southern Boulevard project at City Hall. The plan includes a median and a phased build from NM 528 to May Circle with design and phasing not yet finalized. Project Manager Savina Garcia called Southern Boulevard central to the city and key for 2035 traffic estimates.
Lawyers for Rio Rancho woman Mariah Martinez file a federal motion to prohibit enforcement of the city ordinance that punishes flashing headlights or honking as a disturbance of the peace. They argue the First Amendment protects such driving conduct and stops short of public nuisance.
Leonard Tidwell, 23, pleaded guilty April 24 in 13th Judicial District Court to voluntary manslaughter in the Halloween 2012 death of Gregory Stender, 51. He had faced first degree murder, tampering with evidence and child abuse charges. the infant present at the scene drove the child abuse allegation. The plea caps the case at up to six years in jail and a $5,000 fine plus restitution, with sentencing to be set later.
Rio Rancho Police Department invites residents to an informal “Coffee with a Cup” series on May 9 at three Starbucks locations. Captain Paul Rogers II describes the gatherings as casual open sessions where locals may ask questions and chat with officers while buying coffee. He plans to attend all three events and hopes 5 to 10 officers join each shift briefing.
