Northern Boulevard warehousing plan fails in Rio Rancho council

Rio Rancho action stalled as the City Council fell one vote short of approving a wholesale and warehousing district along Northern Boulevard. The plan, backed by the development department, would not rezone the area to C-2 but would allow rezoning per project, with limited driveways and new circular road access to curb street entries. The proposal, contested by some councilors as spot zoning, was set for reconsideration at the April 12 meeting.

PUC Bill Could End PUC Role in RRUC Condemnation

The PUC faces briefs from city and RRUC attorneys due by April 14 with responses by May 4 as Senate Bill 982 moves. Introduced by Sen. Carraro, the measure would strip PUC approval from utility condemnations in cities over 25,000, a change urged by Rio Rancho officials and awaiting Gov. Johnson's signature. The bill's emergency clause could take effect immediately if signed, but RRUC contends existing condemnations begun before the bill's introduction remain unaffected.

IRS Defines When Dues Are Deductible for Clubs

The IRS backpedals on a 1994 rule disallowing deductions for dues to clubs and organizations. Most professional groups remain deductible, but dues to business pleasure or social clubs are non deductible. The guidance emphasizes that the club’s purpose, not its name, determines deductibility. Examples of non deductible clubs include country clubs and hotel clubs while professional associations and boards of trade may remain deductible. Kiwanis and Rotary will qualify for deductions despite some social components.
