Rio Rancho voters rejected six bonds totaling 10.1 million dollars by roughly a 3 to 1 margin, blocking planned capital projects and a long range bond program. Voter turnout via mail was about 43 percent with no tax increase. Fire station and library bonds drew the strongest support, while parks bonds failed.
A grassroots Citizens Against Higher Taxes committee, led by 20 year resident D Lemm, argues local officials misuse funds and cites about 900 spent on signage versus the Committee For a Better Future's 11,000 on brochures and yard signs. Voters express strong dissatisfaction and call for accountability.
Rio Rancho city council is split between Councilors Dave Bency and Felicia Truscio for the deputy mayor post. Nomination occurred March 10 with a vote expected next week. Council Rule: deputy mayor presides in the mayor's absence and has one vote.
Rio Rancho Public School District moves to acquire nine half acre lots to expand Martin Luther King Jr Elementary School. Aims to add playgrounds staff parking and bus drop off areas raising site from 10 to 18 acres to serve about 825 students with possible future permanent buildings.
Councilor Ron Yestrebi asked for a legal opinion on whether City Administrator James Lewis telephone polling of city councilors violated the Open Meetings Act. Yestrebi condemned the move as an illegal meeting and noted funding for the Unit 16 West redevelopment was pursued without a public forum.
