Grand jury to hear Stepnowskis case in Rio Rancho

Rio Rancho couple Robert and Ruthann Stepnowski face charges of contributing to the delinquency of minors and possession of a controlled substance after a raid March 6 at their home and Summer Winds Drive funeral home. Seized were over $100,000 in filming gear, cameras, films, photos, firearms, and drugs. A related arrest includes Linda Connick, 25, also charged in the delinquency case. A custody hearing for the Stepnowskis’ children is set for tomorrow. Police say a DPS investigation began after a banner filed last summer and intensified after a February tip. The grand jury is expected to hear the case next week.

Volunteers sought for shelter victims information session

Friends of the Shelter for Victims of Domestic Violence invite the public to an April 2 information session from 7 to 9 30 p m at the Old Airport Building 2920 Yale SE. The meeting presents volunteer roles from fundraising to research and childcare. The shelter has served over 3500 people since 1976 offering emergency shelter food clothing counseling advocacy and referrals. Call 247 4219 for details.

Rio Rancho DPS investigates teen sexual assault case

DPS detectives continue probing the reported rape of a 13 year old girl after she was pursued and assaulted by two male suspects near a mesa. One suspect held her while the other raped her with a knife. The teen was taken to a medical facility and authorities seek two Caucasian men, one with brown hair and the other blond.

DPS Public Safety Log Highlights Repeated Break-Ins and Thefts

The March and early April log details incidents across Rio Rancho and surrounding areas. Notable entries include bad checks worth 75 dollars, several garage burglaries, stolen vehicles later recovered, disturbances and arrests for driving while intoxicated, vandalism such as tire slashing, and multiple shoplifting and thefts. Residential burglaries and vehicle thefts are recurring, with items stolen ranging from tools and a VCR to a radar detector. Police and DPS personnel respond to fires, attempted break-ins, and tampering with mail, with arrests and investigations ongoing.

Hearing set for couple charged in son's death

A preliminary hearing is scheduled near Monday at 10:30 am for Rio Rancho couple Jeffrey Taylor and Elizabeth Taylor, each charged with child abuse resulting in death after their five year old son died from acute alcohol intoxication. Two other children were placed in protective custody.

Rio Rancho Court Hears Drunk Driving Case

During the week of March 9 the Rio Rancho Municipal Court collected 1511.50 in fines fees and costs. Judge William Comet heard Kris R. Econopouly of Rio Rancho charged with driving left of center and driving while intoxicated. Econopouly was ordered to pay 3485 in fines costs and fees and serve 30 days in jail. The jail term and 320 of the fine were deferred pending attendance and completion of the first offender program 100 hours of community service and six months probation.

Graceland Murder Reported. Crime Stoppers Offer Issued

Four passersby found 28 year old Fem Stricklin lying in a Graceland SE roadway early Sunday. Police say she was stabbed to death and her purse scattered near the body. Crime Stoppers offers up to $1,000 for information leading to arrest and indictment. call 843-STOP.
