Fireworks display in Bernalillo for volunteer fire dept

The towns of Bernalillo and Santa Ana Pueblo sponsor a Monday dusk fireworks show to benefit the Bernalillo Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department. It will be at the New Mexico Tournament Soccer Complex off NM 44 with admission of $1 per person or $5 per carload. For more information call 867-3311 ext. 183.

Elks Lodge Hosts Open House In Rio Rancho

The Rio Rancho Elks Lodge 2500 at 1530 Barbara Loop will hold an open house on Tuesday from noon to 5 p.m. as part of its annual membership drive. Refreshments will be served and music by the Solar Street Band will run from 1 to 4 p.m.

Trash pickup on July 4 urged by Waste Management NM

Waste Management of New Mexico says residential trash collection will follow normal schedules on the Fourth of July, with routes possibly running earlier. Residents should place trash curbside by 7am to ensure proper pick-up on the holiday.

Rio Rancho Council Reappoints Four to City Boards

The Rio Rancho City Council approved four reapppointments to city boards and commissions. Charles Vaccaro from District 6 was named again to the Planning and Zoning Commission. Jerry Bowser and Barbara Meyerson from District 3 and 6 were reappointed to the Parks and Recreation Commission. Henry Pacelli from District 5, serving as chairman, was reappointed to the Utilities Commission.

Rio Rancho Court Lets Petition Process Stand for Housing Rules

Rio Rancho won a partial victory as Judge Louis P McDonald ruled the citizen petition process and City Council’s enactment of the 1999 housing design standards ordinance were legal. The dispute centers on whether the ordinance, requiring foundations garages and 12 inch roof overhangs for new homes, is constitutional and effective against manufactured homes. The court has yet to decide the ordinance's overall legality.

Rio Rancho to replace fireworks with laser Independence Day show

Fourth of July events in Rio Rancho will feature a parade in the morning and a Sandt Park laser light show in place of traditional fireworks due to fire risk. Laser Fantasy will stage a 35 minute, 23 thousand dollar display with a 70 foot Millennium Arch and patriotic music visible for miles. Ed Chismar notes the show will be as exciting as fireworks while reducing fire danger.

DPS chief's grandson charged in auto theft case

Rio Rancho DPS director Dencil Haycox's grandson Joseph Haycox aged 16 was arrested with two other teens on auto theft and burglary charges. A purse with 1300 dollars was found in a sibling's room, linked to the stolen Lexus. Haycox turned his grandson in and declined to comment. others' addresses unavailable.

Lightning strike kills dog in Rio Rancho

A violent thunderstorm in Rio Rancho on Wednesday afternoon killed a dog at the Super 8 Motel on Barbara Loop. Guest John Manzutto witnessed a blinding flash 15 feet from his second floor window striking the dog in a kennel under a tree, the death was instantaneous. Fire crews evacuated the building after the strike, and Manzutto recalled the incident, saying it stayed with him for hours.
