Dispatchers from Rio Rancho DPS relay an accident with injuries at Southern Boulevard and Veranda Road. Four DPS officers respond including Sgt. Jordan, with Lifeguard 1 helicopter en route for a 16-year-old rider. The vehicle catches fire after a crash, several responders assist with traffic, medical care, and crowd control while the teen is flown to BCMC for surgery.
Rio Rancho couple Robert and Ruthann Stepnowski and Linda Connick, 25, face a preliminary hearing in district court for contributing to the delinquency of two minors by making adult films in the presence of the children. Police also found more than $100,000 in filming equipment, video gear, three cameras, tapes, undeveloped film, syringes, a white powdery substance, firearms, adult magazines, and sexual paraphernalia at the residence. The minors involved are the Stepnowskis' six-year-old son and Connick's seven-year-old daughter.
June 16 at 5 p.m. is the deadline for unregistered voters to file for the July 28 Rio Rancho Municipal School District advisory referendum question about creating a new district in Rio Rancho Estates. Absentee ballots may be marked in person starting July 3 at the Sandoval County Courthouse in Bernalillo, with ballots due by July 24 at 5 p.m.
Rio Rancho negotiates a franchise agreement with Albuquerque Utilities Co to gain city controls and revenue from July 1. Mayor Nash cites benefits while AUC officials concede no definite date. Past water outages prompted state probe requests and internal memos faulted tank water level oversight and delayed public communication.
Sandoval County Commission approved a 1987-88 budget at 38 percent of general funds, short of the 42 percent state requirement. Commissioner Swisstack defended the plan, saying there is no bottomless pit and that possible surplus or new funds could prompt revisiting allocations. The board backed numerous line items including county services, libraries, health, and a 7 percent employee pay raise, while several requests and capital items were tabled for Rio Rancho and Corrales.
