UNM Law Clinic Redefined Legal Education Before 1970s
The University of New Mexico Law Clinic emerged in 1971 as a pioneering experiential program that integrated management principles, client work, and practical lawyering. Under founder William MacPherson the clinic grew into a national model, expanding to four interview rooms with video, rotating faculty, and multiple support programs including misdemeanant defense and tax practice. The clinic influenced funding, internships, and collaborations with state agencies, the IRS, and rural elder rights projects, with MacPherson retiring in 1980 and Michael Norwood guiding the program forward.
