Deaton courted to hear Griff in Rio Rancho mayor case
Judge William Deaton of the Second Judicial District in Albuquerque confirmed he has been approached to preside over the malfeasance case involving Rio Rancho Mayor Terry Griffin and the city. The judge declined further comment, noting no Supreme Court order. City Attorney Stan Hatch supported the comments. Griffin refuses to resign after the council pursued removal under state malfeasance law. Griffin says he has heard nothing about a chosen judge or hearing time. Griffin’s attorney Alan Zvolanek did not return calls. Both sides had asked last week that all four Thirteenth Judicial District judges disqualify themselves, seeking an uncontested decision from a judge free of political influence.
