Washington's tourists face a cold, managed Capital experience
Washington attracts 1.2 million annual visitors who spend over 750 million dollars but cope with traffic, high prices, and bland tours. The proposed National Visitors Center aims to educate visitors about government, yet clarity and policy are lacking. DC relies on a private bureau for tourism with little public input. Congress and consumer groups should push for diverse, participatory tourism including hearings and citizen involvement. Send ideas to Senator Warren Magnuson.
