Noise wall planned for NM 528 widening project

A noise wall of 8 to 9 feet may run along 4,700 feet of NM 528 between Southern and Northern boulevards as the 2.5 mile widening from three to six lanes proceeds in two phases. DOT officials presented plans at a public workshop noting aesthetic placement and input from residents, with construction expected fall 2012 and a total project cost around 30 million dollars.

Arena Drive closure in Rio Rancho for Unser widening

Arena Drive will close from Monday through mid summer to allow the Unser Boulevard widening from Paseo del Volcan to King Boulevard. Eastbound traffic will detour via King Boulevard or Paseo del Volcan. Project completion is expected in October with a total contract of 7.51 million dollars funded by a federal grant of 4.72 million and a 2.79 million bond.

Rio Rancho police seek tips in teen abduction and rape case

Rio Rancho Police investigate a 13 year old girl says she was abducted at gunpoint and raped Tuesday near Spur Road and Pecos Loop. She was taken to an Albuquerque hospital and released the next day. Detective Foster asks anyone with information to call 891 5952.

Libraries win large funding boost for Rio Rancho

Rio Rancho libraries see circulation rise from 364000 to 700000 over four years and receive about 90000 in state grants plus 1.9 million from Sandoval County General Obligation bonds. Library Director Bill Cicola notes soaring demand for ebooks and audio books along with hardback books DVDs and computer use. The council also approved first reading of an ordinance clarifying duties of bicyclists and motorists on the roads requiring cautious passing and safe distances.

City councilor argues mobile sign is a special event sign

City contends mobile signs fall under sign ordinance regulations and cannot be detached or parked for extended periods. Councilor Mike Williams argues the trailer qualifies as a special events sign and could be left parked for 30 days, four times annually, but the city maintains it is not a special event sign and thus must be driven.
