Rio Rancho police will aggressively patrol for drunken driving and other endangerments during the New Year holiday. Last year from Dec 30 to Jan 2 there were 12 drunken driving arrests, averaging three per day. Hosts and revelers are urged to arrange safe rides and a safe environment, while celebratory gunfire is illegal and prosecutable with potential 15 year maximum if a death results.
Rio Rancho and Sandoval County residents can recycle cut Christmas trees for free from January 2 to 15. Drop off at Rio Rancho Sports Complex or Sandoval County Landfill during posted hours, with rules on decorations and no commercial quantities. Mulching occurs on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Bruce Gustin, 73, spends his later years volunteering for Rio Rancho Public Schools after a 39 year Navy career. Spurred by the Cuban Missile Crisis he joined the service, served at sea, and retired in 2001. He chose New Mexico as his home to retire and continues to contribute to the community.
Former teacher Lisa Christopherson, who taught at Eagle Ridge Middle School from 2005 to 2012 and served as the school’s union representative, will receive 125000 from the district after alleging termination for speaking critically of the district and union involvement. The case was settled after an eight hour conference with dismissal of the suit with prejudice.
Cleveland High School senior dancers Alexis Gutierrez and Savannah Paul travel to London to join a New Year parade, their first trip to England. They earned Universal Dance Association All American status after tryouts in Albuquerque, needing about 3500 to fund the journey. Both hope to attend UNM and pursue dance careers.
