August 20 Stage events feature Kasambwe Nguyen and Rutherford

The Stage at Santa Ana Star Casino hosts Kasambwe Liem Nguyen and Rusty Rutherford for stand-up shows. Doors open 6:30 p.m. with performances at 7:30, plus family activities, a fishing game, and music from Red Light Ramblers and Rock Zone.

Rio Rancho Astronomical Society Meeting and Guest Speaker

The Rio Rancho Astronomical Society will meet at Rainbow Park Observatory at 8 p.m. with Dr. Ann Wells discussing mirror planets and NASA missions Dawn and New Horizons. The Dawn mission reached Ceres in 2015 and New Horizons flew by Pluto last month. Stargate will follow if weather permits. For info contact ARAS President Melanie Templer at 220-5355.

Gary Herron to sign Rio Rancho at Hastings Hilltop Plaza

Observer staff writer Gary Herron will sign his third book Rio Rancho at 3 p.m. at Hastings in Hilltop Plaza. Placitas Community Library hosts its third end of summer family celebration Music at Sunset from 5 to 8 p.m. in the library parking lot with lawn chairs and blankets welcome.

Free Sunday Concerts at Haynes Park This Summer

The City of Rio Rancho invites residents to free Sunday evening music at Haynes Park from 6:30 to 8 until September. Bring lawn chairs and picnics to enjoy varied acts at the Rotary Club Barbecue Pavilion. Performers include Roger Jameson and Jaded Heart Band tonight, High Desert Big Band on August 30, and the Rio Rancho Symphonic Band on September 6.

Paintings Exhibit at Placitas Library by Local Class

Placitas Community Library displays paintings from the Placitas Community Center painting class taught by Elaine Slusher. The exhibit runs through August 27 at 453 NM 165, five miles east of I-25. Slusher, a retired artist, has exhibited in Placitas Artists Series shows and other venues.

Trans-Siberian Journey Travelogue At Placitas Library

Placitas resident Ric Farrell presents a travelogue with photos and narration from a month-long Trans-Siberian train tour. He covers modern Beijing guided journeys, Mongolian cultures, Soviet era eastern Siberian cities, Russian family encounters, Moscow highlights, and St Petersburg’s cultural richness with a Q&A session.

Meet your Maker Faire Albuquerque Returns Aug. 29 30

The Albuquerque Mini Maker Faire returns August 29 and 30 to the Balloon Museum for a family friendly event celebrating the Maker Movement. Makers include tech enthusiasts crafters educators engineers and students with hands on experiences and no participation fee for accepted makers.
