Steady Rain Floods Basements and Streets in Richwood Area

Persistent drizzle over 24 hours flooded low lying areas as melting snow and frozen ground blocked drainage. Richwood High School faced surface water. residents aided efforts to hold back rising waters. Blagrove Street saw two feet of water from Beatty Avenue to the city limits. cars stalled and towed. Rain eased Tuesday, but another system returned evening bringing renewed flooding risk.

District 11 Conductress Meeting Attended

Keigley Named To Ohio Fair Managers Board

George W. Keigley was appointed to the Executive Committee of the Fair Managers Association by Dr Clyde W Field president. The 15 member board governs the Ohio association representing 94 fairs statewide and will meet March 7 at the Deshler Hilton Hotel in Columbus.

Essex Community Institute Set For March 9 At Essex School

The Jackson Institute resumes after a snow pause with a full day at Essex Elementary School on Saturday March 9. Morning sessions begin 9 30 lunch at noon afternoon sessions 1 30 supper at 5 30 and the evening program at 7 30 featuring George Alber of Marion with slides from Russia and Donald Oberdier on the business meeting.

Due to bad weather the Union County Democratic Club meeting on March 4 was postponed. It will be held Monday evening March 11 at the Court House in Marysville. All members are urged to attend for important business regarding the Jefferson Jackson Day banquet.

Snow Plowing Costly To County Taxpayers

Winter storms drained Union County households with high heating bills and frozen pipes while snow removal costs rose to over 23 000 this winter, eight thousand more than last year. County crews kept roads passable day and night, limiting emergencies and keeping most families reachable.

Graveside Services Held For Duncan Baby

The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale W. and Linda Lou Cleland Duncan died shortly after birth at Marion General Hospital on Sunday March 3. Surviving are the parents grandparents and great grandparents from Richwood Marion Point Pleasant W Va. Graveside services were conducted Tuesday by Rev Clyde Petree with interment in Green Camp Cemetery. Ballinger Funeral Home arranged the funeral.

Bridge Collapse After Auto Hit Leaves Richwood Driver Safe

Robert Lenox of Richwood escaped injury when his car struck an iron bridge at 3 30 a m on Tuesday. The car was a total loss and the engine caught fire. The collision collapsed the south side of the bridge causing about 5000 dollars in damage. Lenox had minor cuts and bruises and was treated at a doctor’s office before going to his aunt’s home. A county grader freed the car for removal and engineers expect repairs to begin soon with bridge reopening in about 30 days.

Ida Jane Peyton 88 Dies at Home in Richwood

Ida Jane Peyton 88 of 274 Grove St Richwood died Monday March 4 at 4 15 p m at her home. She was born January 7 1874 to Herbert A Chavous and Angeline Mifflin and married Eugene Peyton November 13 1890 who died forty years ago. A Gold Star Mother of the American Legion Auxiliary she was a member of the First Baptist Church. Surviving are daughter Cuba Terry and son Eugene with six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral Thursday March 7 at 2 00 p m in the Winter Funeral Chapel with Rev William Hayden officiating and interment in Claiborne Cemetery.

Miss Mary Jo Winter of Richwood has been selected for membership in the Cedarrest College Concert Choir of Allentown Pennsylvania for the current term. The choir is internationally famed for its honors at the Eisteddfod Musical Festival in Llangollen Wales last summer.

Elizabeth Anne Williams seven year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Alvatine Williams died February 28 at home from a heart condition after months of illness She was born February 18 1956 in Inez Kentucky Surviving are her parents three brothers Gary Eddie and Orson two sisters Marsha and Jane The body was moved from Ballinger Funeral Home to Callahan Funeral Home in Inez for services at 2:00 p.m. Sunday Burial was in Horn Cemetery Inez Kentucky.

Monson's General Store Destroyed by Fire at West Jackson

A fire last Wednesday night February 27 destroyed Monson's General Store at West Jackson. Discovered by Mrs Roy Blue the blaze challenged Richwood and LaRue departments for about five hours with a double roof trapping flames and smoke hindering firefighters. Granville Monson says losses are insured and most dry goods and groceries were destroyed. Gun shells exploded during the blaze.
