Essex Mt Olive Pastor Takes Bride in Double Ring Ceremony

Miss Mary Anna Baker wed Rev. Jerry D. Wortham in a June 8 Springfield Ohio ceremony at First Nazarene Church. The bride and groom, both local graduates, plan home life after July 1 at the Essex Mt Olive parsonage with guests from several nearby towns and states.

Miley Family Reunion Held at Prospect Park

Relatives from Marion Prospect and Norton gathered at Prospect Community Park for the Miley family reunion. Officers were re elected, and planning began for next year at the same park with no date set. Mrs Ida Fox delivered the noon prayer as attendees enjoyed an afternoon of socializing.

Central W S C S Meeting in Church Annex

The W S C S of Central Methodist Church met in the church annex on Wednesday afternoon June 13 with new officers leading. Devotions included "Il Am the Door" by Edna Baker followed by the Lord's prayer. Reports from secretary and treasurer were read. A play titled Big Business was presented by Selah Clark Stella Gaston and Frances Rosette. Refreshments were served by the committee.

Pvt James E Erwin to Leave for Europe Soon

Pvt James E Erwin 18 son of Mrs Ellen May Richwood Ohio will depart for Germany early next month under Operations Gyroscope the Army rotation plan. He serves with the 553rd Field Artillery Battalion at Fort Sill replacing the 18th in Europe. Enlisted March 1955 he trained at Fort Carson and is a former Richwood High student and Hardy Machine Co employee. His father James E Erwin lives in Columbus.

Richwood Garden Club Flower Show Friday

The Richwood Garden Club will hold its Annual Flower Show on Friday June 22 at the American Legion Hall. Entries and placement by 9 a m exhibitor only one entry per class. Public viewing begins 1 p m. The club invites outside participants and highlights spring tulip beds planted by members.

The W. S. C. S. of McKendree Church at York met Thursday June 14 at Mrs Florence Shoup's home with Mrs Minnie Ortman assisting. Dorothy Wiley led the meeting with singing and readings by Alma Romeli the secretary read minutes and roll. The treasurer reported and the program included piano duet Betty Anne Wiley and Susie Hamilton readings Flag Etiquette Mexican Birds vocal choruses Janet Johnson and Terry McGinnis followed by lunch for fourteen ladies and five children.

Charles L Douglas Honored On Birthday

Charles Lester Douglas celebrated his 15th birthday with 36 classmates at his Essex home. Mary Jo Bevis and Larry Douglas won the Guess What Is In the Egg contest, and Janet Blue and Bob Hill’s wings were chosen as the blindfolded task. A refreshments and cake followed a friendly ball game between boys and girls.

Mrs Birdie Adams Receives Education Degree at Ada

Mrs. Birdie Adams, former Essex Local School teacher, earned a Bachelor of Science in Education at Ohio Northern University Ada commencement. She studied at Muskingum College and Ohio State twilight classes, resides Marion, mother of eight, and taught in Jackson Local and Caledonia schools before 1946 and in recent years at Weise's Grocery during week ends. Her family and several relatives attended the Ada ceremony.

Russell McPheter Retires From Navy After 20 Years

Russell McPheter EMC USN retires after two decades of active duty. He trained at Great Lakes and San Diego and served on multiple ships including the Idaho and Lake Champlain. He and his wife plan to settle permanently in Boulder City Nevada near his Nevada base assignment.

Matthews to Complete Recruit Training at San Diego Depot

Robert H. Matthews son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry H. Matthews of Richwood Ohio is scheduled to finish a ten week Marine Corps recruit course on June 29 at the Recruit Depot San Diego California. The program covers basic military subjects and firing of infantry weapons with assignment to Camp Pendleton or Marine Corps schools after graduation.

Edna Baker Hosts Reserve Class Meeting

The Reserve Class of Central Methodist Church met at Mrs. Edna Bakers home on Wednesday June 13. Devotions were led by Mrs. Gladys McEntire and the meeting closed with Mizpah benediction. Contests conducted with Naomi Yarrington and Mrs. Inez Middleton honored. Refreshments served by the hostess.

Candlelight Memorial Service at Leesburg Grange Observed

Leesburg Grange held a candlelight memorial during its Thursday meeting with nine members in white robes and burning candles. Speakers lit candles to honor departed members while Miss Peggy Jewell placed roses on the altar for Drew Adams Sr Hazel Styer Thomas Disbennett and Dr George Jelen. Other participants included Ramona Kirkpatrick Orville Shannon Mary Ambre and more. The group planned future events including a bake sale and a safety meeting and noted Pomona Grange will meet with Leesburg Grange on June 21.

The annual program is underway this week and next with 104 children enrolled pursuing studies under the theme Champions for Christ. The closing Demonstration Program is set for Friday evening, June 29.

Lawn Poultry Show Draws 600 Fans and 900 Birds

The Central Ohio Poultry Club hosted its twelfth annual lawn show at Richwood fairgrounds drawing an estimated five to six hundred poultry enthusiasts. About 900 birds were entered with exhibitors from Iowa, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Kentucky and numerous Ohio towns. Local winners included Starling Mead and Mr. and Mrs. B. Groty with two firsts and two seconds, plus trophies for the best Ancona hen awarded to L. M. Hendricks Ralph Vestal and William Morrison also placed.

Sunshine Circle Picnic at Watkins Home

The Sunshine Circle of The King's Daughters held its annual picnic in the rose bedecked yard of Mrs. E. E. Watkins on N. Franklin Street last Thursday afternoon. Burnside completes face lift on Franklin block

H E Burnside who bought the Richard's business block at South Franklin and East Ottawa Streets has repainted the exterior bricked and sanded bricks. New awnings adorn the building and the former F E Riley space is redecorated for a department store opening about July 1.

Circle of Samaritans Meeting at First Methodist

The Circle of Samaritans met June 13 with newly elected officers presiding. Mrs H Wood led the opening hymn and prayer as Mrs Vandergriff gave devotions from St Matthew chapter six. Mrs Fish presented a dialogue on the world beginning in the community using a wheel illustration. A business session followed with several matters of interest discussed and a social hour with refreshments served by Mrs Tennant and committee.

Showers Bring Relief From Heat Wave Sunday

Relief from a heat wave arrived Sunday afternoon as showers dampened picnickers and swimmers. The rain boosted dry crops and gardens while a cool Monday brought better sleep. In the southern county rain fell in torrents, flooding fields and delaying farmers from corn work. High Sunday reached 85 degrees, dropping 20 degrees with the rain.

Two Richwood youths won honors at the State Community Institute Poster Contest. Miriam Davis of Route 1 Richwood took third in the grades one to six division. Janet Blue of Route 1 Richwood earned honorable mention in grades seven to nine. Both receive monetary awards.
