Richwood's second annual chautauqua is set for July 24 to 29, 1915 with the Lincoln Company producing the event as Richwood Chautauqua. A junior chautauqua will accompany the sessions under a playground expert, promoting play as education for children. Tickets are urged for the whole family and the complete program will appear in the Gazette soon.
Mrs J F Rapp and Miss Edna Colver hosted a miscellaneous shower at the Rapp home on east Blagrove street honoring Harriet Fulton who wed Monday to Walter Lake of Alliance Ohio. Guests enjoyed music rice shower and poetry notes then gifts of cut glass china linen aluminum ware and silverware were unwrapped followed by a two course luncheon and social hour with out of town attendees from Marysville Dayton Marion and others.
Mrs David Carr and her Sunday school class spent a pleasant day fishing on the Scioto river Thursday. They traveled by wagon and enjoyed a delicious picnic dinner and supper. Present were Misses Lucille Smith Grace Glassmeyer Naomi Glassmeyer Pauline Beeney Ethel Hodge Cora Fausnaugh Pauline Prichard.
Memorial services for dead brothers and sisters were held Sunday by the Richwood Odd Fellows and Daughters of Rebekah. The lodges gathered at the IOOF hall and marched to Claiborne cemetery for the service at Ivan Weaver's grave, then met at Bethlehem M P church where J B Barker of Pharisburg delivered an address. Graves were decorated with blossoms and attendance was large.
Union County Y M C A banquet at the M E church in Richwood drew a smaller crowd than hoped due to confusion over eligibility. Speakers included C E Kagay toastmaster George Woods Edwin Livingston R R Jenkins T B Lanham and Rev A H Weaver with a two course supper served by church ladies and a week of meetings across Union county.
The Wheatfield Meeting at the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station on Friday June 26 shows strong attendance prospects. President W O Thompson of Ohio State University and Dean Eugene Davenport of the University of Illinois College of Agriculture will attend and speak at the evening session.
The Kings Heralds a large group of young M E church girls helped by Miss Cleon Weaver and Miss Elinor Gill presented a program Friday afternoon for the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society. The Sunday school room was filled with attendees.
Arthur Waterman and his wife depart Richwood Friday for a week long trip. Mrs Waterman will visit relatives and friends in Darke and Green counties while Arthur attends the thirteenth annual convention of the Ohio State Optical Association in session at Cincinnati Monday and Tuesday next week.
Last Monday at 2 30 PM at the Fulton residence in Richwood Walter Lake of Alliance Ohio and Miss Harriet Fulton were united in marriage by Rev J R Lloyd. The ceremony used the ring and the couple left for Brady Lake and Cleveland before settling in Alliance.
Mrs. Elias Firstenburger of Marion entertained Modern Priscilla Club members at her mother Mrs. C C Sechrist home on east Ottawa street Richwood with a four course dinner. Guests from Richwood and Marion joined the afternoon outing and a theater party is planned in two weeks by Mrs. Fred Mansfield.
Lee Jones ten year old son of Mr and Mrs Chester Jones of Richwood was badly injured Sunday at his grandparents home near Delaware. While moving toward the pasture he ran into a fence tearing flesh from his right arm below the elbow. He was stunned and later taken to Jane Case hospital Delaware where twenty four stitches were required to close the wound.
Mr and Mrs Harold Prettyman and Mr and Mrs Guy Prettyman visited Lima last week to attend Lima High School commencement. Their niece Miss Irene Prettyman was among the graduates.
The Union County Rural Letter Carriers Association held its annual meeting in Richwood with officer elections. George Jewell of Peoria was named president, G M Howard of Richwood vice president, and John Anderson of Marysville secretary treasurer. Delegates to the state convention were David Neal and Joseph DeGood with alternates Pearl W. Baker and C C Sechrist. A Mapel Dell picnic is planned for August first Sunday, with invites to nearby mail workers. The state carriers picnic is set for Labor Day at Olentangy Park in Columbus. Attendees included John Anderson Lee Hamilton D D Hamilton James Beck Pearl Baker F Rapp and others.
Claiborne Grange No. 1807 met at Langstaff hall on Monday. M M Cameron led the lecture hour. The program featured Duke's Mixture by Earl Smith, a recitation by Esther Baker, The Silo by George Reigle, How to Keep the Boy on the Farm by E L Langstaff, Why Girls Should Do House Work by Dora Langstaff, and Look Out for the Cat by Wilson Comedy Company. Next meeting is June 21. all members urged to attend.
W. W. Ward and wife were visiting relatives in Columbus over the weekend when their car was stolen from a West Broad Street garage. The thief unlocked the garage and took the car during the night, returning it damaged with a broken windshield a bent fender and scratches. Police investigated but made no arrest. garage manager covered the damage and Ward returned home Sunday night.
Miss Edna Violet Tanner of Richwood has been appointed by Governor Willis to the office of Lady Visitor in Factories in District No. 6 with a salary of 1200 dollars annually. She passed the civil service exam with the highest grade and recently graduated from Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Her parents Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Tanner attended the commencement festivities this week.
Rev J R Lloyd of the Presbyterian church attended the all day celebration of the Stone church near Warrensburg on Sunday to mark its eightieth anniversary. Rev J J Halliday was installed as new pastor amid a large crowd. Richwood attendees included Mr and Mrs J L Horn, Mr and Mrs J A Shipley and children, Miss Anna Shipley, and Mr and Mrs B H Hamilton and children.
The Philathea class of the Baptist church met at Lewis Jones residence east of town Tuesday evening last week. Ninety guests attended as men wore overalls and women gingham aprons. Mesdames Wood Hancock Jenkins gave readings and a contest followed by social time. Hostesses were Jones Temple Heenan and Miss Nellie Eddy. A delicious lunch was served late.
Last Friday evening Miss Ruth Hewitt, a bride elect, was the guest of honor at a linen shower hosted by Miss Leah Cox and Miss Hazel White at the Cox home on South Franklin Street. Pink and white decor, a bride’s chair welcome, a two course luncheon, readings, piano solos, and vocal numbers accompanied the event with numerous attendees listed.
The Sunshine Band of Pleasantview M. P. Sunday school held a social at H. C. Converse home near Claiborne with 21 members. A short program of readings and solos followed a business meeting and refreshments in pink and white. Next gathering planned July 8 at Jesse Bulen’s home west of Richwood.
Undertaker Lloyd Winter and his brother W H Winter of Raymond traveled to Toledo on Thursday to attend the joint conference of the Ohio and Michigan State Funeral association. The convention drew a large crowd and featured an elaborate display of hearses caskets embalming fluids and related instruments. They enjoyed a boat ride on Lake Erie and were hosted by Toledo officials.
Mr. and Mrs. George Huston quietly marked their 57th wedding anniversary at home on east Blagrove street. Married June 13, 1858 in Athens Ohio, Mrs Huston born Mary Thompson. They moved to Richwood 29 years ago and are esteemed residents. Mr Huston served in the Civil War. Their children are George and Jesse Huston of Wichita Kansas, and Mrs Mary Sharp of Los Angeles California.
The marriage of Bernard D. Coe and Ruth P. Hewitt was solemnized in Gray Chapel at Delaware after O W U commencement exercises. Dr. Herbert Welch performed the double ring ceremony. Only immediate relatives attended, with a dinner at Hotel Allen. The couple will reside in Athens Ohio.
Mrs Hester Fisher and Mrs Hester McNeil attended the Columbus wedding of their granddaughter Miss Esther McNeil to Mr John Kyle of near Youngstown Ohio. The groom recently completed the agricultural course at Ohio State University and plans to live on a large farm near Youngstown in a new house he has built.
Miss Ada Drown of Marion wed Rodgers Smith of Dayton in a high noon ceremony at Epworth M E Church performed by Dr A G Scott. Ada, a longtime stenographer for E C Smith and J H Clark, will live in Ithaca where Smith teaches biology at Cornell University.
The Gazette received a box of sweet cherries from J. M. Horn and his wife of Richwood who are spending summer on their Rockbridge area farm. Horn notes ripe June berries and mulberries, with farm products in excellent condition. One branch held fifty cherries, some fruit measured 3.14 inches in circumference.
John Collier once of Richwood and son of W F Collier lies critically ill at his Wade worth residence. He endures neuritis with slim prospect of recovery as two attending physicians observe his condition.
