District Meeting Of V. F. W. Held At Basil Ohio

District No. 11 of the V. F. W. met at Basil Ohio on Sunday June 10 with over 200 comrades and sisters present. Comrade District Commander presided and Charles Geddes outlined civilian defense steps for bomb events while the Jr Vice Commander urged wartime plant readiness. A parade followed at 11 30 and lunch was served by the Pythian Sisters. the Auxiliary opened at 1 45 led by President Effie Sweger.

Organization Meeting Sets 1951 CROP Drive Goals in Union County

The June 7 meeting brought pastors and lay leaders together to form the Union County CROP drive committee. Helen Sullivan was elected county chairman with three vice chairs from the parent agencies. The goal is 3 000 bushels of wheat to feed 1490 refugees for a year, with CROP Sunday July 1 and canvass July 2 and 3.

Birthday Party Honors Sheryl Ann Grandstaff

Sheryl Ann Grandstaff celebrated her 12th birthday Monday night at her parents home west of town. Guests included Mr and Mrs Pearl C Johnston and son David Mrs Dorothy Carr and Mr and Mrs C P Johnston and Mr and Mrs Charles Chapman of Mt Gilead. A birthday cake was featured. Ice cream was served with the cake. Sheryl Ann received many nice gifts.

New Residential Beauty Shop Opens West of Town

Mrs Louise Sloop opens a residential beauty parlor at her home 1 4 mile west of Richwood on State Route 4. She will perform all kinds of beauty work and is known to Richwood residents from prior local shop employment.

Children’s Day Observed at Essex Church

Essex Methodist church held a Sunday Children’s Day with a program including songs, recitations, solos, a play Story Hour in Palestine, a drill, and a Mizpah benediction. Young participants and their teachers received praise for well attended, beautified services with flower decorations by Mr. and Mrs. Merrit Monson.

Martha Washington Circle meets with Mrs Matteson in June

The Martha Washington Circle met with Mrs J S Matteson for their June meeting on Tuesday. Eighteen members and one visitor attended. They opened with a record, the Lord’s prayer, and a flag salute. Jessie Jones spoke on Women of Today. Florence Davis and Ethel Hedges won contests and refreshments were served. The July meeting will be with Mrs Glassmeyer.

The Philathea Sunday School class met in the church parlors with seventeen present. Miss Jessie Jones led readings and contests after a brief business session. Refreshments were provided by Mrs. Ray Beaver Mrs. R. B. Dildine and Mrs. Burl Ross. Mr. and Mrs. Chester Cahill of Columbus visited Mrs. Frank Martino. Peggy Ann Swartz was a weekend guest at the Martino home.

Ladies Aid Of Church Of Christ Met At Temple Home

Mrs Edna Temple and Mrs Jane Shoup hosted the Ladies Aid at the Temple home. Mrs Almira Salisbury led devotions, two new members joined, Janis Berridge and Fern Fryman. President Anna Ferrall led the meeting, plans for church kitchen repairs were discussed, 16 members and two visitors attended, and lunch followed. July meeting scheduled at Mrs Ted Millers home.

Shorty Pierce Suffers Third Degree Burns

Harvey Shorty Pierce son of Mrs. Mary Pierce owner of an oil station on West Ottawa Street was badly burned Saturday afternoon when a leaking hose sprayed gasoline on him and his clothing catching fire after he lit a cigarette He suffered third degree burns to his left arm and body and was moved from Richwood Clinic to Jane M Case Hospital in Delaware for treatment with recovery time expected.

The Paul Vick Guild held a Tuesday potluck at Mrs. Ruth Ransome’s home to observe guest night. Mrs. Betty Walker led devotions and Mrs. Margery Gulliford gave a talk. A talent table and games followed. Next meeting at Mrs. Martha Moore’s home.

Pfc Glenn E Blue son of Mr and Mrs Glenn H Blue of Richwood area has been promoted to corporal. He has served in the instruction company offices at Parris Island South Carolina for the past year. He is expected home briefly before transfer from the United States to Korea.

Central Methodist Class Meeting Report

The Finetta Class of Central Methodist Church met Thursday evening with vice president Carrie Douglas in charge. After a hymned opening and unison reading of Fate of the Upright, Myrtle Burgoon offered prayers. A Mizpah benediction closed the business session, followed by a program led by Dora Dirst with readings by Virginia Schmelzer Debbie Hill Myrtle Burgoon and others and a class contest won by Cora Dirst Virginia Schmelzer and Judy Pfarr.

Joan Alexander Weds Jos Wilmes In St Mary Church

Miss Joan Alexander daughter of Mr and Mrs Carl Alexander of Richwood married Joseph Wilmes son of Mr and Mrs Frank J Wilmes of Richland Pike Marion in St Mary Catholic church Marion. Rev Father Robert Van Kaenel officiated high mass at 1030. Bride wore ice pink satin gown with lace bonnet and carried white carnations and a white orchid. Reception for 85 guests followed at the couple’s home and they left for a southward honeymoon.

1946 Ordinance Sets Parking Rules on E Blagrove and West Ottawa

The village approved an emergency ordinance to guide street improvements on E Blagrove and W Ottawa for State Highway Department work. It bans parking on portions of East Blagrove and West Ottawa and sets parallel or angle parking elsewhere to ease increased traffic hazards. Next week more details will follow.

Claiborne Grange held a Monday meeting with Master Richard Evans in charge honoring Richwood high school seniors as guests. June 21 Pomona Grange will meet at Milford Center with kitchen committee appointed. A program featured a series of readings and a cake walk followed by sandwiches salad and cool aide.

Friendship Circle Entertained At Dunbar Home

The Friendship Circle of the Past Noble Grands of the Rebekah Lodge met at Mrs. Atha Dunbar’s Tawa Road home. Twenty five members and four visitors attended. A July 9 Lake Baccarat picnic was planned. Mrs Pauline Wood, after a stroke, was treated at Jane M. Case hospital in Delaware.

Juvenile Grange Met Friday Evening June 8

Jackson Juvenile Grange met Friday night with Master Danny Streeter in his chair. Seventeen officers and members were present. An apron contest was judged by Mrs Blanchard Moore and Georgiana Cramer won. Upcoming events include Safety Poster contests for ages 5 to 10 and 10 to 14, a boys book end contest, and a girls doll dressing contest.

T. N. T. Club Meeting Details at Richwood High

The Richwood T. N. T. Club met at the high school building on Wednesday June 6 with 25 members. Demonstrations covered sewing patterns and seams by Sara Cheney Meredythe Matlack and Rebecca Morrison.
