Delaware County gears up for a June to July Sesqui Centennial with Day celebrations each Friday featuring old fashioned costumes parades torchlight events and reunions. The week of June 27 to July 4 will showcase parades pageants style shows and homecomings.
The Richwood Park Board releases the season schedule for swimming lessons. Beginners attend three days weekly with sessions from June 16 to July 3, and report June 16 at 11 15 a m. Intermediate lessons run June 23 to July 3 from 10 15 to 11 a m. Lifesaving and advanced classes run 9 00 to 10 15 daily. Instructor is Mrs Ruth Keener.
The Up and Coming 4-H Club met at Roger McDaniel's home on June 9 with Jon leading the pledge and Danny Swartz assisting. Eight members and one counselor plan to attend 4-H camp. the group schedules a tour the first week of August and will visit Holiday Hill on July 28. The next gathering is at Nancy Allen’s home on June 23. Marsha McDaniel demonstrated showing a sheep and refreshments were served. Giles McDaniel showed year old slide films from the fair.
Open church Sunday at 2 pm in the First Methodist Church Richwood for the wedding of Miss Polly Jo Allen and Mr L Green. A half hour nuptial ceremony will be held in the church room with a certificate to follow.
Jerry D Wortham of Essex Ohio received his Bachelor of Divinity from United Theological Seminary in Dayton on June 4 and was ordained into Elders Orders on June 8 at Lakeside. He and his wife have served the Essex Mt Olive Methodist Church for three years and will move to the Casstown Bethel Charge in the Springfield District with 210 S Monroe St Troy Ohio as their new address. Mrs Shipley mother Paul Shipley of Wyoming visited for two weeks.
Leesburg Grange met with Laird Mack presiding and twelve officers present. Guests judged sewing and youth contests awarding cash prizes. two summer ice cream socials planned. a booth at Richwood and Union County fairs. a donation to the National Grange Youth Training Fund. and prayers for Ruth Phillips and Melissa Green. Mrs Keller graduated with a BA in elementary education.
The Claiborne Merry Munchers held their regular meeting at Judy McElroy’s home on June 3 at 2 p m Mary Lou Mannasmith presided The group repeated the 4 H pledge Ruth Styer was elected health representative Becky McMahon chose to represent the club in the county safety speaking contest Advisor Mrs Daisy Warner reviewed each girl’s project progress The next meeting is set for June 24 at 2 p m at Connie Cameron’s home Geneve Dis serve r, reporter.
Richwood FFA sent three delegates Bill Foreman Mik Hoffman and Bill Minter to the Ohio FFA convention with about 900 peers. They voted to send 40 Holstein heifers to Turkey as a co op project and attended a banquet where Governor O Neill spoke.
The Jackson Stitch and Stir 4-H Club held a brunch at 9 a.m. on May 28 at Lana Sue and Mary Joe Bevis’ home. Mrs. Louise Mack spoke on child care and Mrs. Lucille Cramer demonstrated fabric pattern laying. Doughnuts and cocoa were served.
Next Monday June 16 the Vacation Bible School at First Baptist Church begins for children ages four through entering tenth grade. Sessions run 9 to 11 each weekday with divisions studying the life of Jesus. Closing exercises are scheduled for June 29 at 7 30 p m.
Mrs. Ruth Allen of Midland Texas spends two weeks in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jay Tennant and Mr. and Mrs. R L Dunbar as she visits the area.
The 14th annual Central Ohio Poultry Show will be held Sunday June 15 at the Richwood fairgrounds. Admission is free with eats and cold drinks on site. Special meets include the Cochin Bantam Fanciers Club and the Rare Breeds Club of America National Summer meet. The Rhode Island Red Club of America sponsors the Red King Coronation with eligibility limited to King Candidate owners. Trophies donated by Richwood merchants are on display in Marion Winters’ south window.
Marysville public schools announce summer art instruction for both children and adults. Grades 4 to 7 meet 8:30 to 11:00 for drawing painting and crafts while adults plan outdoor subject studies with trips to the surrounding countryside. Led by J. A. Strickler the programs run Wednesdays in the junior high art room with the first session on June 18.
At a recent quarterly meeting First Baptist Church voters changed Sunday School and worship times for the summer. Sunday June 15 starts Sunday School at 9 15 and morning worship at 10 15. Evening services continue all summer. The church invites the Northern Baptist Theological Seminary men chorus of 43 voices for next spring. A pot luck supper will precede the Sunday evening service every fifth Sunday.
Richwood Lions Club met Thursday evening June 5 in the Masonic Temple dining room with C F Gill in charge. Lion Harley Woods gave the invocation as Claud Swartz presented two driver training films. The 20th year anniversary and ladies night will be celebrated at the next meeting, with District Governor Shoemaker Norman Kreuzber Forrest Steinman Harold Walter and Walter Hutchinson among the guests. The Church of Christ will provide dinner with reservations due by Monday the 16th.
Mr and Mrs Elmer Watkins attended graduation exercises in Wellington where grandson Michael Harris son of Mr and Mrs Walter Harris joined the class Michael Harris received a four year athletic scholarship from Lehigh University Bethlehem Pa for Lorain County achievements and was among seven hundred accepted from 3500 applicants He will enroll this fall.
Tuesday morning the Richwood Fire Department answered a call to the Oliver Cowgill residence west of Richwood. Lightning entering an electric wire caused a bed light to ignite the mattress. no blaze formed though upstairs rooms suffered heavy smoke and water damage. Mrs. Cowgill alerted neighbors as rain fell.
Miss Wilda Mae Turner bride-elect of Sherman J. Nicol of Marysville was the guest of honor at a bridal shower in Marysville on June 3. Twenty five guests attended with blue and yellow decorations and gifts under an umbrella. The couple, daughter and son of Richwood and Marysville families, will marry in an open church ceremony June 15 at 2 30 in St Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church south of Marysville on Route 736.
Nine Richwood FFA members at the 30th Ohio Future Farmers of America Convention in Columbus, with 700 delegates from 350 schools. Awards include 3rd in Communications station and state judging results by Charles Minter, Bill Foreman, Mike Evans, Don Wasserbeck, Jim Steele, Bob Styer, and Charles McNamee. Five juniors filed for State Farmer Degree applications for next year.
Miss Wilda Mae Turner a bride elect of Sherman J. Nicol Richwood guests from Marysville Prospect and Richwood attended a miscellaneous shower June 7 at Mrs Willi s Brown home. Sixteen guests enjoyed contests gifts and refreshments. The bride’s fiance is son of Mr and Mrs Robert L Nicol of Marysville. Also noted are visitations by Mr and Mrs Phillip Van Winkle from Rome New York and guests Geo W Easterday and L Dudley Osborn from Clearwater Florida.
Clifford H. Williamson aged 68, longtime Richwood Erie station agent, was honored June 4 with a 50 year gold railroad pass by Erie supervisor E A Blair. Williamson joined the Erie in 1908, served at Pottersburg and Richwood, and has been in Richwood since 1928.
Gruber-Reidenbaugh becomes Rambler and Rambler American dealer for Richwood. Rambler sales rise 72 while rivals fall. Models include V8 four door and station wagon with broad color range and up to 35 mpg. Firm, owned by Merle Gruber and Jack Reidenbaugh, has Pontiac dealer history since 1952.
The Ohio Annual Conference of the Methodist Church met at Lakeside from June 3 to 8. It drew 1396 registrants including 623 ministers and featured missions talks by bishops Valencia of Manila and Mondel of Delhi. Many appointments changed, with Roy Ballard and K Albert Kuntzman reassigned for another year.
Richwood Cub Scout Troop 101 held a wiener roast at LaRue Roadside Park last Friday night with nearly 100 attendees including Den Mothers leaders and parents. Cubs earned Wolf badges from leader Herb Webber and recruitment urged for any local Cub Scout aged boy not yet registered.
Twin sisters Mil dred Dee and Miriam Marie, daughters of Mr and Mrs Walter Hitt, west of town, were surprised Sunday afternoon by visit from Mr and Mrs William Otte and Miss Barbra Williams of Marysville who brought gifts. Ice cream cake and lemonade were served as guests wished the children many more birthdays.
At a regular Richwood meeting Mayor John I Brobeck and all members discussed house trailer regulations with W C Spain seeking permission for a trailer on South Franklin St A hearing is set for June 23 The treasurer Kenneth Jordan reported a 457 deficit in the general fund as of June 1 and the council approved a two year two mill light levy to cover street lighting costs 5000 annually drawing from other funds for city expenses
Richwood High School publishes its honor roll for the last period listing seniors distinguished and meritorious students by class. Names include Rosemary Cole and Martha Cramer with multiple Merit and Distinction recognitions across seniors juniors sophomores and freshmen.
The listing shows church activities for the Methodist York Charge at Byhalia with Rev Arlys Talbert, including preaching at 10 a m and Sunday school at 10:50 a m led by Robert Plotner. Bethel, Grace Chapel, and McKendree churches show 10 a m Sunday school, named superintendents, class meetings, prayer services on Thursdays and Wednesdays, and evening Bible study at Grace Chapel under Rev Cramer.
The Storey descendants met for the 36th annual reunion Sunday June 8 at Arlys Bibler’s Mans field Ohio home. Attendees came from Richwood Marion Morral Brush Ridge and Mans field. Officers elected were President Orlie Storey vice president John Lewis and secretary treasurer John Fields. The next gathering is planned for Richwood in June at the home of Mr and Mrs Orlie Storey.
Lightning struck a South Franklin Street pole causing fire and damage to televisions in the Cudd and Laughrey homes. A rear TV wire burned the baseboard and a fan in an incubator failed at Starling Mead's home. The Dari-Delite air conditioner failed and a sump pump was burned. Two more storms brought 2.3 inches of rain flooding fields and basements.
Funeral services were held for Kenneth Richardson 56, a former Richwood resident and Marion engineer depot employee for 15 years. Born April 6 1902 in Lidell Illinois he was the son of Bert and Katie Richardson and survived by two daughters Lois Winkle and Thelma Coffindoffer one son Leonard Richardson a sister Eva Wood and eight grandchildren. Burial was in Chapel Heights Memory Gardens near Marion.
On Saturday evening June 7 the children of Mr and Mrs Albert Webb gathered at the home of Mr and Mrs Edward Webb near Summersville to celebrate the couple s 62nd wedding anniversary. Ice cream cake and coffee were served and the gathering was social. Mr Webb is very poor ly and has been at the Edward Webb home since January. Mrs Webb is in fair health. Present were Mr and Mrs Owen Webb Columbus Mr and Don Webb LaRue Mr and Mrs Warren Levings Cardington and Mr and Mrs Edward Webb and the honored guests.
The fourth meeting of the T N T 4 H Club was held at the Fetter home on June 3 with 22 members present. President Cenmis Roberts called the meeting to order and by laws were read. discussions included safety and constitution items.
