State Fire Marshal Ray R. Gill and the Fire Prevention Association of Ohio urged communities to limit fireworks usage. They warned of deaths and injuries caused by unsupervised handling and noted bans are undermined by rural sales near communities. Historical yearly firework fatalities are cited from 1922 to 1929.
A religious education group met at the M P church to plan a summer leadership training school in Richwood. Two courses will be offered The Message and Program of Christian Religion taught by Rev. Robert W. Pierce and Learning and Teaching taught by Supt. W E Beeman. Five weekly sessions with a one dollar entrance fee covering books. Enrollments available through Rev. Pierce Beeman Mrs McElheny or Mrs Gladys Eddy.
A large crowd attended the Foreign Missionary Society guest day at the M E church in Los Angeles. Mrs. Clara Herr Dove gave an inspiring Bible and missionary talk, with devotional leadership by Mrs. F L Winter and piano solos by Margaret Ann Riley and Dorothy Taylor.
Census supervisor W. H. Story reports Richwood lost 28 persons since 1920. The 1930 tally lists 1573 residents, down from 1601, with 14 farms and 58 unemployed people. Figures are preliminary and subject to correction.
A petition filing at the Allen County Board of Elections announces Judge H E Garling of Lima Ohio seeking the nomination for Judge of the Third District Court of Appeals. He is serving the unexpired term of Judge Kent W Hughes after Governor Cooper appointed him following an exhaustive inquiry.
Margaret Pauline Brown three year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Wayne Brown of Detroit sang on Station WMBC during the children's hour on June 5 She was the youngest singer and will sing again soon Little Miss Brown is granddaughter of Mr and Mrs John A Scharf of Richwood
Miss Martha Gillespie of Madisonville Ohio and formerly Richwood graduates from Denison University on May 9 with an A B degree. She earns departmental honors and Phi Beta Kappa induction as a junior and will teach Christian Education in Covington Kentucky next year. Daughter of Rev H C Gillespie former Richwood Baptist pastor.
Martha Carter, 76, of Pearl Street, died Wednesday following paralysis. Born in Raleigh in 1854, she was married to Austin Carter who preceded her. Survived by sons John Pearl and Frank Carter of Richwood, sister Mrs. William Strawther, brothers William and Albert Parker. Funeral at African Baptist Church conducted by Rev. B. F. McKinnon. Burial by Lloyd Winter & Son in Claiborne cemetery.
Richwood mayor Charles H. Brown appeals to parents to control youths during the Fourth as firecrackers and rule violations endanger safety. He notes officers hesitate to prosecute and urges stronger parental authority to reduce disturbances this year.
The Columbus Colored Giants lost 8 to 0 to Richwood, marking the fifth straight loss in two seasons. Richwood pitchers Mougey and Johnson each had three hits and two errors were charged against Richwood. Next Sunday Kenton Reds visit Chester Park for a key matchup.
Richwood friends received cards announcing the marriage of Miss Garnet Alder to Mr. William Brooks of Springfield on May 10. The bride, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Alder, taught in Richwood schools for several years and last year worked as an instructor in Ashland schools. She is well and favorably known in Richwood.
The Philathea class held its regular monthly social in the church basement on Tuesday evening. Inspiring addresses were given by Mrs. Z Ua Warren Rev. R. W. Peirce and J. E. Langstaff. A Bible question contest was enjoyed, followed by a social hour and refreshments.
Mrs. B F Sloop hosted the Woman's Home Missionary Society of the Mr. PF church with assistants Mrs. R D Roberts and Mrs. Mae Rosette. Mrs. Kinney led devotionals. Mrs. McKinnon presided. Papers were read by Mrs. Fryman, Mrs. Kinney, and Miss Hamilton. a question box was led by Mrs. Gaston. Roberts and Rosette sang a duet and a trio "Send the Light" was performed. A luncheon followed.
Eugene Webb aged 10 son of Mr and Mrs Robert Webb of London was killed when a Standard Oil truck struck him at Main and First streets as he crossed during the Gentry Bros circus parade. The truck halted immediately. many spectators witnessed the tragedy at the corner.
The opening of S. R. Sanders funeral home at East Ottawa and Clinton streets drew about 400 attendees on Saturday. The modern facility is described as up to date and a sign of Richwood’s progress.
Mr and Mrs F A McAllister were Sunday guests of Judge and Mrs F P Humes in Delaware They attended the O Wet baccalaureate service and the memorial at the grave of the late Hon Frank B Willis by the Columbus Glee Club The club plans an annual pilgrimage to the tombs of Harding and Willis
Noel A Neal son of Carrie Neal Underwood of Liberty North Carolina will graduate today from the United States Military Academy at West Point New York. His mother Carrie Jacobs is descended from the late Charles Jacobs former mayor of Richwood.
F LeRoy Allen an attorney from Richwood announced Tuesday his candidacy for Common Pleas Judge of Union County as a Democrat pending the August primary. A lifelong Union County resident he earned his degree at Ohio Northern University and has practiced law in Richwood for ten years.
Forty two children were examined at a pre school conference held last Thursday in the grade school building by the Union County Health Board. Examinations were led by Health Commissioner H G Southard Marysville and N Sifritt Marion County Health Commissioner LaRue Miss Schmitz of the State Health Department Columbus Miss Spauling Marion County Nursing Service Maryville etc. Conference held at Essex Friday and Magnetic Springs in the afternoon.
Governor Myers Y. Cooper proclaimed Saturday June 14 as Flag Day in Ohio marking the 153rd anniversary of the Stars and Stripes. The document urged schools and patriotic groups to arrange programs and to display the flag prominently on all public and private buildings.
Claiborne township 4-H Pig Club led by Benjamin H Adams met June 4 with about 30 members and parents. Two new members joined raising the count to 12. Velma Smith hosted Work and Win Poultry Club June 6. Cooking Club formed with officers listed. Union county hosts leaders and officers training in Marysville June 5 with demonstrations and discussions led by agents Bear and Shriver and others.
The Reserve Class of the M P Sunday school met in the church parlors Friday evening for their regular monthly meeting. Sixteen were present as officers were elected for the coming year and a luncheon was served by hostesses Mrs Herman Werner and Mrs Owen Webb.
The first meeting of the B Sharp Music Club was held at Miss Marjorie Dickason's home on a Wednesday afternoon. Officers elected were President Donald Dixon Treasurer Louis Watkins Secretary and news reporter Rachel Temple. The group discussed Mozart and enjoyed games and refreshments. The next meeting will be at Anna Lucille Ransome's home.
Mt. Carmel Chapter No. 42 Order of the Eastern Star held its annual inspection at the Masonic temple with 57 members and 33 guests attending from Sunbury Pomeroy Marion Prospect and Ostrander. The inspecting officer praised the chapter's work and memorial service.
A Sunday morning collision on Prospect Pike near Magnetic Springs left Robert Brisker injured and his car wrecked. The impact derailed a freight car and a wrecking crew replaced it. Brisker was taken to City hospital with a broken leg and left arm, condition not serious.
B Reed Howser announced Monday his candidacy for the Republican nomination as County Commissioner at the August primary. Howser, a farmer and stock raiser who has judged stock at many county fairs, is regarded as one of Union county's best stock judges and has been a life long Republican with no prior county office.
West Jefferson Mayor Matt Statson faced two intoxication arrests over a 24 hour span. Deputies Gorman Clark and Earl Lamb jailed him once, with Squire Francis McGuire setting a $100 bond. A second arrest occurred Thursday night by Marshal George Baker. both charges await hearing next Tuesday.
Roy Jones had a $200 bond forfeited after failing to appear in court on a reckless driving charge filed by Harold Coleman whose car was damaged in a collision. Attorney R. C. Thrall represented the state. Edith Hunt seeks divorce from James W. Hunt amid bigamy history.
Bruce B. Gaumer of Marysville announces bid for the Democratic nomination for state senator from the 13th-31st district. The district includes Union Logan Harding Marion Crawford Wyandot and Seneca counties and will elect two senators this year.
