A local newspaper exposes a marriage arranged by advertisement. Mrs. Delila Newell of the Girls' Industrial Home and Mr. Joseph Bolton of Lyons Kansas wed after Bolton sought a wife last February. Meanwhile Claiborne cemetery work advances toward completion as a memorial to contributing locals.
John C Gaston of Pharisburg dies after a long illness at home. Kathryn Speyer wed to Srl Goff Zuspan at St Raphael in Springfield. James William Hutson, Claiborne farmer, dies after six months illness from heart disease. Ruth Wurtsbaugh marks her twelfth birthday with a gathering at the Wurtsbaugh home.
A canning demonstration will be held at the Richwood high school building on June 16 at 2 00 p m in the Home Economics Department. Sponsored by the Union County Nutrition Council under the direction of Mrs Langstaff and Miss Edna Burtchin the event covers canning fruits with sugar substitutes and newer methods. Discussion and questions will follow open to anyone interested.
Sunday, June 14 has been established as Flag Day nationwide and should be observed by all. The mayor urges proper display in the village on that day.
The inland bass fishing season begins officially at midnight after a holidaylike opening day. More than 600, 000 Ohioans hold licenses and may flock to two new lakes as Conservation Commissioner Don waters notes. Anglers 18 and older must carry a 50 cent license with a 10 cent issuing fee. Minimum bass length is 10 inches and the daily bag limit is six. The black bass ban in the Lake Erie district remains through July 1.
Mr. and Mrs. Ted Collier of Wayne Michigan visited their parents Mr. and Mrs J S Collier and Mr. and Mrs O A Keigley and daughter Martha over Saturday and Sunday.
Miss Pearl Duff Freese became bride of Dr Volney E Thomson of Plain City in a Wednesday noon ceremony at Rev John E Longsworth and wife Sherrodsville. The couple plans housekeeping in Plain City after a brief wedding trip and a return to Richwood.
Dwight C Van Atta from Richwood who served as a Pilot Officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force has received a release and after visiting his parents near town head to Randolph Field Texas to become an instructor in the U S Army Air Corps known as the West Point of the Air He was commissioned August 10 1941 at Trenton Field.
At the next Lions Club meeting on Friday June 19 ladies night will be observed and new officers will be installed A guest speaker will also be present It is urged that every member attend this meeting
Mr. Carmel Chapter No 42 Order of Eastern Star held a regular session Tuesday night at Masonic Temple initiating six candidates Mrs C B Rockhold Mr and Mrs Chester Parrott and Mr and Mrs Richard Sidle. Out of town guests included deputy grand matron Jennie Ewing Miss Catherine Cheney and others from Marion. The 22nd anniversary will be celebrated at the next meeting June 23 with Past Matrons Patrons and charter members to be honored.
Mr and Mrs A B Somersot received word that their son William known as Bill graduated from the Paris Specialist School on June 5 1942 He will begin a month of training at the Cand ler Warehouse in Atlanta Georgia a supplier of parts for five southern states William is stationed at the Atlanta Base in Atlanta Georgia
Mrs. F. E. Lewis and Mrs. J. F. Wood hosted the Embroidery club Friday afternoon just west of Richwood. Besides members, guests included Mrs. C. T. Porter and Mrs. W. C. Spain. Luncheon was served after social hours. Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Thomas and son Tommy, and Mrs. W. C. Thomas of Marion visited with the Serans Sunday.
Claud Swartz of Richwood announced his bid for County Auditor. He owns the Ford Agency in Richwood for seven years, is a Union County native born in Jackson Township, active in K P Lodge Essex Masonic Lodge and Lions Club, married with two children, a Richwood city council member, and treasurer of the Richwood Tri County Fair Board.
At the Ohio Annual Conference in Springfield Ohio on June 28 Rev D B Nelson was returned to the First Methodist church in Richwood Other appointments include Rev Homer Baum gardner to Springfield District Rev Leland Wiley to Middleburg Rev E L Winans to York Center Rev Elisha Kneisley to Marysville Rev A J Reith to Rush Creek and Rev G G Hughes to Hillsboro Central Methodist church of Richwood is to be supplied.
The Farm Bureau Council sponsors a Nutrition class covering new nutrition trends meat planning and preparation and food preservation. Directed by Miss Edna Burtchin it will be in the home economics department at Richwood High School on Thursday afternoon June 18 1942 at 2 o'clock. Open to all interested.
The Baptist Missionary and Aid Society gathered last Thursday at Mrs. Elizabeth Glassmeyer home with Mrs Roy LeMasters as president opening the session Devotions were given by Mrs Don Temple A program was presented by Mrs Josephine Porter Reports from the Northern Baptist convention were read by Mrs Gladys Eddy and Mrs J Herbert Goeney Refreshments were served by the hostess and assistants
The new motor vehicle tax stamps are now available and all car owners are urged to procure at once to avoid confusion caused by the January sale.
Officers and township chairmen of the Union County Public Health league met at the county superintendent of schools office with Supt. W. L. Harris presiding. They named committees to study the state constitution and bylaws and nominate a Board of Directors, with a next meeting set for June 22.
The Civilian Defense Executive Committee urges 100 percent attendance at weekly first aid meetings. Women show more interest in war prep than men, but all should prepare for duties at home to win the war.
Sunshine Circle of The Kings' Daughters held their last meeting of the year at the Lenox home on North Clinton street with eighteen members present. Plans were made for the welfare committee to assist several needy families in town. A social hour followed and refreshments were served by retiring president Mrs. Lamont Cramer. The circle will resume meetings on September 1.
Mrs Lenna Patterson entertained the Aid society of the Essex church on Thursday. Mrs Nellie Hoffman led devotions and Mrs Bernice Morgan presented a Flag Day program. Guests included Mrs Maurice Griffin of Walhending and others from Vanlue Haverhill and nearby towns.
Practically all groceries and most businesses in Richwood will close Saturday July 4 1942. Stores will stay open Friday evening July 3 to allow residents to stock enough supplies for Sunday.
Mrs. Nelson Fryman is visiting at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kirk located north of town.
Citizens of Richwood urged to read a Washington pamphlet Salvage for Victory and collect waste paper rags rubber and scrap metals. Businesses asked to organize basement to garage scrap drives with five day notice between June 10 and 21 to aid the war effort and front lines.
Richwood FFA livestock judging teams won both the Union County Dairy Cattle Judging and General Livestock contests held May 20 with 9 schools competing. The Richwood squad earned two trophies and scored 2230 points in the dairy contest and 1835 in the general contest, with Donald Wood and Robert Stallsmith top individuals.
Union county farmers face a wheat storage problem within thirty days as 450000 bushels of wheat and mixed grains are harvested. Limited transport and storage space mean farm storage must be prepared now, with moisture control and careful timing of combining to protect quality and market value.
The Claiborne Sew-So Club met Tuesday afternoon June 2 at the Claiborne Community house with eight members. Advisor Mrs. A C Warner led a discussion sparked by questions from the May 22 advisors' meeting in Marysville, where Edna Callahan spoke. Dolore Rosette and Glenna Harper will host the June 16 meeting.
Mr and Mrs Ed Jolliff of 122 S Clinton Street received a letter from their son Samuel Jolliff who is in Australia. He writes he is safe well and hopes to hear from them soon. He explains the delay in writing and signs off with love.

The Richwood Village Council held a called meeting Tuesday afternoon to hire a marshal. The vote stood five to one in favor of Charles Davis, an established local ice businessman with a favorable reputation.
Wilma Marsh hosted a birthday party at the Burgoon home west of Essex for W. F. Burgoon. Guests included J. F. Rapp C. H. Williamson K. D. Kyle and family Jimmie R. C. R. Peet Robert Young and others. Refreshments were served during the social hour.
Stanley L. Martino of Richwood Ohio is promoted to corporal per Col. Thomas L. Gilbert Commandant of the Lubbock Army Flying School Texas. A graduate of Air Mechanics School Keesler Field Mississippi he serves with the 500th School Sqdn at the twin engine flying school. He enlisted August 21 1941 and is an air mechanic.
Miss Clara Jerew daughter of William Jerew Richwood and Mr Omer King son of Mr and Mrs Leon King Pharisburg were married Saturday June 6 in Greenup Kentucky The bride graduated Richwood High School this year The groom is employed by Nestless Milk Co of Marysville They will reside in Marysville
