A large crowd filled Richwood shops and streets last Saturday night while Lake Baccarat drew many visitors for swimming fishing and picnicking over the weekend. Local improvements include street topping by Urbana contractors and plans for a major fair with about 25 local horses anticipated to race over three days.
Mr and Mrs William Ruhl announce the marriage of their daughter Inez Oretha to Gordon L Wealch of Marion son of Mr and Mrs R A Wealch of Travers City Michigan. They wed April 30 1949 at 730 pm in Marantha Church Marion with Rev Earl Holliday officiating. Relatives and friends attended.
The Annie Richards Circle of the First Baptist Church met last Thursday evening at Mrs. Pearl’s home with Ruby Temple as president. Members shared Racial Fiction and Facts, read Ephesians 2 and prayed, and dramatized 2 Corinthians on the theme Builded Together In Him for 1949 50. Rev Turner received thanks for printing the program books. A dainty lunch followed. Bernice Good of Mansfield visited her mother Tillie Beach.
The June gathering of the Ladies' Aid of the Church of Christ met at Mrs Mary Jane Ridges home with 18 members and 2 visitors present. Pauline Neel led the meeting and Jane Shoup gave devotions. An ice cream social is planned for Gill alley on Saturday night June 11. The group also welcomed Rev and Mrs Farringer to the church.
At the Claibourne Richwood district school board meeting the kindergarten will continue next year tuition free for district patrons. A limited number of pupils from adjoining districts may enroll with parents paying 1.00 per week and providing transport. Transportation is one way if the child uses a regular bus route. Half day sessions are planned with possible morning and afternoon classes if enrollment permits. Prospective pupils must register by June 15 with Supt. H. R. Fisher by phone 2891 and provide the child's name. Child must be five by December 31, 1949.
Mrs. Geneva Dilsaver and Mrs. Lena Moore attended the District V F W encampment at the Deshler-Wallick Hotel in Columbus on Sunday June 5. Dilsaver was elected junior vice president and Moore was elected guard for the eleventh district.
Members of the World Wide Guild of the First Baptist church held their June meeting on the lawn with Martha Brobeck in charge. Gwendolyn Moyer led worship and Sharon Burnsides gave devotions. Kay Brobeck won a contest as Patty Parrott reviewed the book Tumbleweed Boy. Mrs. Robert Turner and daughter Sandra served refreshments.
Richwood King’s Daughters City Union to meet Thursday June 9 at 8 p.m. in the First Methodist church basement. A special program accompanies the Rose Tea and all circle members are urged to attend. The Woman's Society of Christian Service moves its June meeting to June 16 at Mrs. Potts home with hostesses Powers and Warner. Visitors welcome.
Mr and Mrs Edwin Ritchie of Pittsburgh and their guests stayed at the home of Mrs Ritchies parents Mr and Mrs J L south of Pharisburg during the past week They left Thursday with James Clevenger and his son Donald accompanying them home.
Miss Helen Frum and her companion are spending several weeks in Florida for a vacation with plans to visit sunny beaches and enjoy the warm climate.
Graveside services were held Sunday at 2 o clock for Sgt. John Van Pelt 22 son of Mr and Mrs Van Pelt Cincinnati a 99th Division infantryman killed January 15 1945 in Germany during the Battle of the Bulge Interment followed at Claiborne cemetery by Marion Winter Surviving parents a brother a sister Mrs George Fahnestock Gardiner Mont and grandmother Mrs Emma Winter Richwood were listed as survivors The body was escorted from Chicago by Sgt Delmer Dellibac who also fought in the same battle
The Victory Circle of The King's Daughters and their husbands enjoyed a picnic supper Monday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Livingston with twenty in attendance. The evening was spent socially with games and the group adjourned until September.
Richwood and Marysville couples joined other Lions in Cleveland for a three day state convention. Mrs. Brown received an orchid as oldest lady present and Mrs. Betty Mowery won a prize as youngest mother in attendance.
The Girl Scouts met Tuesday at the high school. Betty Newton demonstrated chocolate tapioca pudding. Fifteen members attended as plans for a camp were made and the group scheduled butter cookies for sale on Saturday June 11.
A fellowship supper and reception honored R. B. Farringer the newly appointed minister of the Church of Christ and his family in the church basement with large turnout A short program led by Mrs Clinton Salisbury followed the reception.
The Richwood Lions Club held its annual Father-Son banquet last Thursday in the high school auditorium. About 130 diners were served by the Youth Choir of Central Methodist Church directed by Mrs. Jeanne Winter Harger, with moving pictures provided by Claude Swartz. Jack Coder of Cleveland visited his mother Mrs. J Blaine Harris on South Clinton Street.
Recent guests included Mr and Mrs Ruel Epler of Romeo Michigan and Mr and Mrs E R Epler of Toledo Ohio. Also visiting were Mr and Mrs Russell Ep ler and children Loren and Carolyn of Birmingham Michigan and Mr and Mrs John Flint of Detroit Michigan.
Mrs. Jessie Parish hosted 28 Essex W S C S members with guest Dorothy Householder. The group opened with patriotic rites and prayer, Pauline White spoke on The Lord's Prayer a Priceless Gem, and Mattie Blue led a notable officer installation including President Mary Fry and vice president Louise Blue. A luncheon followed hosted by Mrs Parish and co-hostesses.
The Union County American Cancer Society unit held its bi monthly meeting at Marysville high school with Mrs. Alice Williamson presiding. Attendees from Richwood included Mrs. Marguerite Hastings Lovelace Hunt and Laura Benton. The unit recessed until August for new officers and dues collection. The annual cancer campaign closed with a healthy treasury and funds benefitting several patients including a serious leukemia case.
Natalie Howard was honored at a women’s shower held Tuesday night at North Clinton Street home of Mrs. Kate Cramer. Miss Emma Shields assisted with games and prizes awarded to Mrs. Dorothy Davis Mrs. Janis Welsh and Mrs. Margaret Ridge. Guests included Mrs. Beverly Ridge Miss Eula Gene Gulliford and others, with refreshments served by the hostess and helper.
Mrs. Vada Davis entertained the Friendly class of the First Methodist Church at her home Thursday evening with assistant hostesses Mrs. Wilmetta Simmons Irene Lewis and Helen Gulliford. President Ruth Spain led the business meeting and devotions were given by Mrs. Reading. A lunch was served.
John William Drake son of Mrs Agnes Drake of West Bomford Street graduated at the 23rd annual commencement of the Texas Tech nological College in Lubbock Texas. He earned the Bachelor of Administration degree in the division of Business Administration.
The Martha Washington Circle will meet on Tuesday evening, June 14, at Mrs. Koch's residence on Beatty Avenue to hold its gathering.
Mr and Mrs Marvin Fogt and daughter Marla spent last week with Marvin Fogts parents Mr and Mrs Lewis Fogt at Anna Ohio.
The 1906 Railways tale notes Erie schedule changes in Ohio to aid Richwood resident Porter E Barnes. The 60-year-old, courting a Peoria widow, wins an 11:24 p m stop for the last Erie train passing Peoria, after prior early stops.
Mr and Mrs Manley K Eller of Marion announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter Luella Ruth to Rev Wallace M Ellis pastor of Union Baptist Church West Jackson. The wedding is set for June 19 at 2 00 pm at Calvary Evangelical United Brethren Marion with open church custom. Luella Ruth a Mansfield Senior high graduate and now an aide at Dr Rea's office. Rev Ellis a graduate of Reaford North Carolina high school and Bob Jones College Greenville South Carolina.
The Well Child Conference will be held at the high school on Wednesday June 15 with registration from 1 30 to 2 30. Mothers with older children from last fall should attend again and those with younger children are urged to bring them. For details contact Mrs Ernest Fish or Mrs Paul Speyer.
Mrs. D. B. Shoup travels with Mr. and Mrs. Edward Barker and children Donna and Ted to Missouri for several days visit. She plans to visit her stepmother Mrs. James Mannasmith and her brother and sister in law Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mannasmith in Kansas City and Mr. and Mrs. Barker will visit Mr. and Mrs. William Manley and family at Jefferson City Indiana.
The Claiborne Grange will hold an open meeting Monday night June 13 honoring fathers and sons. Serving committee includes Georgia Cramer Leafa Davis Eva LeMasters Ruth Roberts and Jo Ann Cramer. Bring essays or give them to Mr Emmons.
Mrs Maude James of Bucyrus was a guest last week of her aunt Mrs Florence Hitt. The visit highlighted family ties and community connections noted in local social notes.
Dr and Mrs Don E Dixon and Mrs Leo J Bauer and son Paul of Indianapolis were Thursday guests of Mrs Ethel Dixon on East Ottawa Street.
Maybelle Fattig of LaRue spent a week visiting Mr and Mrs Van Buskirk and their daughter Elen.
Announcement of the marriage of Miss Mary Lou Harger to James C. Keyes of Wichita Kansas. The ceremony occurred Sunday May 22 at a Methodist church in Orange Texas with a small group present. The couple plan a August trip to Ohio and will vacation in Columbus and Richwood with relatives.
Rolla Doyle pleaded guilty to sale and possession of intoxicating liquors and was fined 500 dollars. Bessie Doyle pleaded guilty to keeping a place where intoxicating liquors were sold and was fined 300 dollars. The prosecutor sought an injunction to declare the Doyle home a public nuisance with a $1,000 to $5,000 bond possible to remain at home under court terms.
The Live Wire Circle of Central Methodist held a Friday meeting in the church parlors with Jolly and Ever Ready Circles sharing a cafeteria dinner. An afternoon program featured a song Stepping In the Light devotions by Mrs. Debbie Hil readings from Isaiah 5 and a play At the DJ's Office with Dr. Blanche Kinikin and a cast including Mrs. Lizzie Sloop Inez Middletown Pearl Evans Della Phelps and Olive Sinkey. Meeting ended with Mizpah benediction. A ten pound baby boy Trent Ivan Sehnert was born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sehnert of Rochester New Hampshire Saturday June 4.
Mr. and Mrs. Cloyce Moore of Marysville join Mrs Grace Moore and Mrs Loretta Stiggers of Richwood in visiting E. W. Moore and family in Sycamore on Sunday.
A baby dedication service will be held at the close of the next regular O. E. S. meeting Tuesday evening June 14.
Mr Edwin Dennison and wife and daughter Pam of Huntsville join Mr and Mrs Willis Brown for a Sunday picnic dinner at Mohican Forest.
