Chiesa Bros Fruit and Confectionery Closes After Years

Twenty five years ago on June 6 1918 the Chiesa Bros fruit and confectionery store closed after Frank Chiesa returned to Italy with the family and Fred and Earl Ghiesa will likely be drafted. Joseph Chiesa Tysville and Frank Chiesa have ties to Italy with enlistment in the Italian army and a former prisoner of war. Owen Griffith survived being trapped under an overturned tractor for two hours near Pharisburg, while Pletcher Daniels formerly of Richwood died in Columbus and was brought home.

Union County Schools Receive Warrants for 1943 Second Quarter

The Union County School System received warrants from the School Foundation Fund for the 1943 Second Quarterly Settlement on May 20, 1948. Each rural and special rural school is listed with specific amounts, including Allen Rural 2185.36 and Claibourne Richwood Rural 6233.74, among others.

Sea Bees Return to Rhode Island Monday

Seaman 2nd Class Hartley Harger of the Sea Bees left Columbus for Providence Rhode Island after a nine day furlough at his parents home Mr and Mrs F H Harger of South Franklin Street Springfield was visited by Tommy Arthur who also serves with the Sea Bees and accompanied him back to camp Mrs Dessie Hanby and Miss Jeanne Winter went to Columbus Sunday night to accompany Seaman Harger to the base.

New Methods Speed Delivery Rollout in Cities

The postal service is issuing branch office unit numbers to city mail recipients to speed delivery. Postmaster General Frank C Walker ordered immediate implementation with most large cities already notifying residents. The plan, needed due to rising mail volume and 30,000 postal workers in military service, aims to relieve overburdened staff and cut handling times.

Seven Richwood students win multiple District State scholarships

Richwood High School dominated Union County results with seven firsts and six seconds in county standings. District and state rankings saw ten students in the top 20 percent district wide, two in the top 20 percent state, and several honorable mentions. Notable names include Joy Haines, Phyllis Marsh, Ann Kersey, Joan Fry, Carolina Chiesa, Robert Davis, Shirley Thompson, William Strohl, Helen Hall, and Nicholas Wall among others.

Blood Donor Unit Decided Success in Richwood Visit

The Red Cross Blood Donor Unit spent May 26 and 27 in Richwood, collecting 275 pints of blood. Dr. Aronson led the effort and hopes to return in September to Union County, with Marysville visits planned for July 23 and 24. Of the donors, 237 pledged to donate again. 310 people passed through the physical room, about 30 rejected and 18 missed appointments. Mrs. Myrin Miller thanks all helpers.

The 30th annual Richwood High School Alumni Association banquet drew 147 attendees on May 28 at the high school. Invocations, recognitions for the class of 18 and service members, musical numbers, a speech by Richard Langstaff, and officer nominations for the coming year were featured. Grange Disapproves Council Action At Richwood Meeting

Claiborne Grange met May 24 with Master Watt Treese presiding. Members discussed Richwood council time change and a large crowd attended. Degrees were conferred by Raymond and Pharisburg Granges. Next meeting June 14 plans third and fourth degrees. families asked to bring covered dishes.

Benton Transferred to Annapolis of the Air

Bernard Lewis Benton a 19 year old Richwood Ohio native was named a Naval Aviation Cadet and sent to Pensacola Florida for intermediate flight training He later completed elimination training at Bunker Hill Indiana and will earn the Wings of Gold and be commissioned an Ensign in the Naval Reserve or a Second Lieutenant in the Marine Corps Reserve

Bernard Rubeck Buys Two Registered Heifers in Ohio

Bernard Rubeck of Richwood purchased two registered Holstein Friesen heifers from Edward G Walter of Marion. The animals are Pleasantdale Annabelle Carnation 2359639 and Pleasantdale Ann Ophelia 2370990. Change of ownership was recorded by the Holstein Friesian Association of America Brattleboro Vermont. The association issued 13 354 registry and transfer certificates to Ohio breeders during 1942.

Fifteen youths enter service from Union County

On May 27, fifteen young men from Union County aged 18 plus passed physical exams in Columbus and were inducted into the armed forces. Eight joined the Army, five the Navy and two the Marines, with several listed by name and home location. One was held over for later processing.

Highway crews resume patching on state highways in Union county

Weather limits patching work on state highways in Union county as Frank C. Higley Division 6 State Highway Department maintenance engineer says repairs will take time. Wet weather over the past month has increased highway damage and expanded the patching program. Union County maintenance superintendent Howard Cline has two or three crews focused on patching and cementing breaks in the coming weeks.

Union County Civilian Defense officials report a coordinated blackout across Union and eleven counties was a great success. In Richwood and nearby areas crews responded promptly from 9 55 p m to 10 44 p m when the all clear sounded.

Memorial Day Services Honor Local Fallen Soldiers

Memorial Day services were held Sunday at Claiborne and Price cemeteries with large crowds. The American Legion Auxiliary Martha Washington Circle participated and graves were decorated. Music by Richwood High School band followed addresses by Rev. R. C. Burton and Rev. Vandergriff with assistance from Rev. D. B. Nelson. Local merchants closed for the holiday.
