Local Post Office urges patrons to mail early this week and next to ensure delivery before Christmas. Hours are 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekdays and 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon Saturdays with no extended counter hours. Christmas cards 6 cents first class. include full addresses and ZIP codes. return addresses encouraged.
Soloist John W. Drake of Batavia will join the Union County Community Choir for the Christmas Cantata Love Transcending on Sunday December 15 at 7 p.m. at Richwood Baptist Church. Drake recently sang as baritone with the Hamilton Civic Choral Society during its Requiem performance. Area soloists include Mrs. Berkeley Smith Jr Mrs. Dan Kyle Mrs. Tucker Smith and Gene Cheney. Narrator Rev. James Wagner choral director and organist Mrs. Jack Weller and Mrs. Charles Gill. Public invited.
A weekly list of local happenings includes the Junior Class Play on Friday December 13, a B B Jon Alder event on Saturday the 14th and a Christmas Cantata at 7 PM on Sunday the 15th. The NU School Board Wildcat Boosters Well Child Clinic Twig 7 are planned for Monday the 16th followed by Better Mothers CCL events on Tuesday the 17th and American Legion Library Trustees on Wednesday the 18th and Lions Club activity on Thursday the 19th.
About 75 Scouts families and friends attended an Appreciation and Awards Dinner at First United Methodist Church. Dr. Robert Gray of Prospect spoke on scouting history and displayed slides. Kenneth Northrup Lew Warner were praised by Rev James W Wagner for leading Troop 109 which now exceeds 50 members.
Azle Al Coder of Rt. 2 Cardington dies after months long illness at Mt Gilead Hospital. Services set for Thursday at Curl Funeral Home Cardington. He was well known in harness racing circles and is brother of Marion Coder of Richwood. Recent visitors included George Gosnell of Newark and Lloyd Casson family of Granville.
Commander Sam Chapman and Auxiliary members delivered 23 flags to Claibourne Elementary Jr High North Union Magnetic Springs Byhalia and Essex schools. Several teachers and classes received flags and flag etiquette booklets. Additional items included Need-A-List Scholarship Booklets Ohio Government Digests and a Richwood Public Library donation.
Mr and Mrs Ray Reeley returned last Thursday after visiting Hawaii four islands. They traveled 2500 miles by five airlines. On the return flight the plane circled for ninety minutes over Iowa awaiting clearance to land in Illinois.
Thanksgiving holiday guests of Judge and Mrs Robert F Allen were Noel R Allen and family of E Blagrove St Rob ert L Green and family of Frankfort Ky and Edward Robe and family of Athens.
Nearly nine months after Elizabeth Lorene Einstein vanished on her Redlands walk home from school a nationwide search continues. The 14 year old, five feet five inches tall with brown hair and eyes weighing 103 pounds, disappeared on the two mile route through orange groves. A $5000 reward is offered for information. Reports should go to The Richwood Gazette or Captain Charles Callahan, San Bernardino County Sheriff.
The 2.9 mills operating levy for the North Union School District was soundly defeated Tuesday in a special election. Results show 892 against and 580 for with about 40 percent of the 1,472 voting in favor. The levy previously failed in the November general election by 1,560 to 1,046. A precinct summary follows.
The North Union Junior Class presents Paint the Town Pink this Friday December 13 at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Cast includes Dave Littell Mara Ezerins Phil House Judy Kirby and many others with Diane Davis as student director and Thomas Anderson as faculty advisor. Proceeds fund the Junior-Senior Prom expenses.
K. D. Kyle announces two new directors for The Richwood Banking Company Lloyd George Kerns and Joan J. Wiley join the board. They augment a current slate that includes F. B. Marsh F. K. McDaniel L. E. Matteson J. O. Eddy C. W. Swartz G. T. Anderson K. D Kyle and D W. Retterer.
North Union edge Ridgedale 70 69 in a tight ballgame as Al Van Winkle hits two clutch free throws with 3 seconds left. Van Winkle scores 29 and Mike Morgan 18 lead NU, while Marty Swartz wells 22 for Ridgedale in a battle on the Wildcats' court.
The Richwood Independent Agricultural Society reorganized December 19 electing Kenneth Van Zant as president with Harold Hoffman vice president Giles McDaniel treasurer and Mrs Russell Lowe secretary. Five directors Perry Fryman Russell Lowe Giles McDaniel John McNamee and Kenneth Van Zant were elected for year terms. The 1969 Richwood Fair will be held over Labor Day weekend.
Kenneth Marvin remains Police Chief of Richwood after Council rejected a gas contract from Columbia Gas of Ohio. The council unanimously approved Marvin withdrawing his resignation and offered a $6000 yearly raise. A. O. Grooms was named to fill the unexpired term of Tom DeGood, whose resignation takes effect Jan 1, 1969. Next council session is Jan 13.
Alan Van Winkle of North Union was chosen by WMRN as Player of the Week for high school basketball. He scored 58 points in two games against Marysville and Ridgedale, bringing his season total to 88 in four games, including two clutch foul shots to seal a win.
On November 27, North Union students organized a Science Club to foster interest in science with projects for a Spring Science Fair. Officers include President Greg Casto, Vice President Bruce Charles, Secretary Treasurer Jenny Waters, Librarian Jim Grindell, and News Reporter Jim Bonham. Advisor is Harry Powers. Next meeting is Wednesday December 18 after school in the high school physics room.
The estate of Dana J. Riley who died June 13 is entered into probate court. Ruth Riley is appointed executrix. Appraisers are Dale Retterer Tom DeGood and Floyd C. Kerns. Inventory listed at 13582 dollars.
A fire crew responded December 10 at 4 54 p m to a trailer on Lynn Street the Louie Sabo residence after an overheated stove sparked the blaze and prompted a quick response by local firefighters.
Word has been received of the death of Pfc. Roger Ray Kerns in the Republic of Viet Nam. He had been reported missing since Nov. 30 and died of wounds while engaging hostile forces in combat. He was born May 6, 1948 in Kenton and was the son of Clarence and Eloise Wood Kerns of Byhalia. Surviving are four sisters and a brother. Funeral arrangements are pending.
The Richwood Banking Company joins other Full Service banks to sponsor Dr. Seuss How the Grinch Stole Christmas on CBS TV December 22 from 7 to 7 30 p.m. EST. The animated special drew 45 million viewers last year and 38 million the year before.
Mrs. Nannie Conley of Rt 1 remains hospitalized at Marion General with injuries from last Monday's car train collision. She was moved from intensive care late last week. Her daughter Betty aged 16 was readmitted for an infection and treated for back and leg abrasions from the accident.
A one car crash at 7 30 p m December 3 on St Rt 37 three miles west of Richwood involved Charles Scott Overfield 22 Richwood driving east. The car struck a telephone pole and damaged a left rear fender bumper and a fence owned by John Sidle Rt 1. Sheriff Edward Amline reported the damages.
All Richwood stores will stay open until 9 p.m. during the holiday period. Businesses will be open every night from Monday through Saturday starting December 12.
