United Appeals of Union County reports 39700 campaign total

The 9th Annual United Appeals meeting in Marysville disclosed 39700 in cash donations and pledges to date. Trustees named for three year terms include Rowland Seymour Robert Carder Hugo Vollrath and Harris J Jackson. Loyal Men and Women's Class Meet at Cramer Home

The Loyal Men and Women's Class of the Church of Christ gathered Sunday evening at Mr. and Mrs. Don Cramer’s home. D. B. Shoup led devotions, plans to send fruit to shut-ins were made, and the program featured poems a Bible Quiz and a memory recitation by Bessie Shoup. Twelve members and two guests Dale Fryman and Bro Granger shared a lunch. next meeting at the Shoups' home.

Birthday Party Highlighted by Center December 22

The Civic Center lists a combined November and December Birthday Party set for Thursday afternoon December 22. Helen Sieg will narrate and present slides of the Holy Land. A regular Board meeting is scheduled for December 8 at 7:30, with hostesses Nancy Shoup Mae Fish Selah Shuman Pauline Neel and Edith Cramer serving the week.

First Baptist Scouts Earn God and Country Award

At ceremonies at the First Baptist Church two local Scouts were presented the God and Country Award. Honored were Jim Holcomb and Phil House for a year of study under their pastor. This marks the first such awards for the church's Scouts. Scoutmaster Kenneth Northrup, Assistant Lew Warner, and Troop 109 members attended.

Prospect Lions Open Tree Sale in Prospect

Prospect Lions Club kicks off its annual Christmas tree sale starting December 3 indoors at the former Almendinger Garage on North Main. Merle J. Thomas notes the club collected two large loads of trees from Guernsey County to fund sight saving, TB foundation work, religious education, and park improvements with Sunday hours 1 to 4 PM.

Christmas Program At Essex W S C S

The Essex Methodist WSCS held a December 1 potluck in the church basement with 43 attendees. Members, guests and children enjoyed a Christmas program including piano, carols, a Luke gospel story, a playlet and an organ solo, followed by a social hour.

Trouble Comes By Two To Billy Taylor

Billy Taylor aged 77, son of Mr and Mrs Ray Taylor, fell at his home and broke his right arm. He had just recovered from a left arm fracture and was hospitalized from Wednesday night to Friday at Marion General.

Circle Meeting at Mrs Kyle Park's Circle

Annie Richards Mission Circle of the First Baptist Church met December 1 at Mrs Kyle Parks home with 21 members and guests present. Mrs Elizabeth Matteson led devotions, Mrs Lawrence McDaniel led the business session. They planned sending an inspirational poetry book to service members or relatives, gifting a special missionary fund, and collecting 50 cents per member for the State Scholarship Fund. White Cross quota for Nicaragua was completed. The program on The Christmas Story, led by Ada McDaniel with helpers, included scripture readings true to life stories and the cradle cross and crown symbols, plus Christmas hymns.

Local Post Office Extends Saturday Hours

The local post office will extend window service hours to 5 p.m. on Saturday December 10 and 17. The change helps residents purchase stamps and mail parcels at their earliest convenience.

North Union Junior High Hoop Night Friday

North Union district hosts a double round robin junior high basketball doubleheader at the high school gym on Friday December 9. Seventh graders tip at 7 00 p m and eighth graders at 8 00 p m with quarters shorter than varsity play. Admission is 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for students.

Harold S. Bown Elevated to IA Manufacturers President

Harold S. Bown was elected president of the Iowa Manufacturers Association at its Okoboji convention for 1966 67. He is factory manager for Armstrong Rubber Manufacturing Co in Des Moines and is named Man of the Month by Iowa Business and Industry Magazine. He is married with three children.

Farrington Nears 300 Victory Mark

National driving champion Bob Farrington of Richwood tops the nation with 284 harness wins in 1,371 starts as he nears 300 victories for the third straight year. He leads Del Insko 44 to 28 for top honors and has earned over $700,000 this year.

Pace Setters Honor Corn and Soybean Winners in Union County

The tenth Pace Setters Corn and Soybean Awards Banquet at Fairbanks High School featured toastmaster Dr. Robert Schery and speaker Dean Roy M. Kottman on agriculture’s role in Union County’s economy. James Mitchell won the rotating corn trophy for the third time with 175.8 bushels per acre, plus the Area III efficiency award. Other area winners included Richard Leeper, Russell Lowe, and David Rausch with their respective yields and efficiency gains. Lutrelle Lee led soybean honors with 50 bushels per acre and 1.74 dollars per bushel over costs. five county producers received state lapel pins.

Harlem Stars Return Planned by Wildcat Boosters

At a Wildcat Boosters meeting plans were laid for a Harlem Stars visit on December 29 at North Union gym. The Stars will face the Richwood Royals in an exhibition with local Junior High teams opening the event under Virgil Rankin. Tickets go on sale in announced locations soon.

The Past Matrons Circle of Mt. Carmel 42 met Tuesday November 29 at Henrietta Sullivan’s home. Elnora Colegrove installed new Past Matron Margie Parsons. The group discussed Thanksgiving Thoughts, with devotions by Barbara Hoff man and scripture read by Elinor Davis. Richwood Fair elects six directors in annual vote

The Richwood Independent Agricultural Society held its annual election on December 3 at the secretary's office on the fairgrounds. Five directors were chosen for three year terms: Harold Hoffman, Paul Houk, Richard Griffith, Duane Stillings and George W. Keigley. Lester Eblin was elected to fill a one year vacancy.

Grange Traveling Program Presented at Marysville

The Marysville Grange hosts the third Traveling Program with Millcreek Grange leading a two-part night at Scott's Hall. The first part features Christ Senses with a pageant and readings, while the second covers Farmer and Agriculture with Leesburg Grange. A final program is set for Friday night December 9 with State Grange Master Byron Fredericks and City Manager Frank Derby speaking at intermission.

Elgin FFA Plans Santa Claus Toy Drive

The Elgin FFA will act as Santa Claus for needy children this Christmas. Members began collecting and repairing used toys on December 5 for a drive ending December 16. Toys will be given to Elgin School District families and via Marion Clearing House.

Driverless car strikes bank front in Richwood

A driverless car rammed the marble frontage of Richwood Banking Co last Friday morning causing minor damage. The vehicle owned by Victor McFadden had been parked outside the A and W Restaurant with the engine running in freezing weather when it slipped from park and rolled backward along Franklin Street into the bank.

Corn Show And Talent Table At Claiborne Grange
