Farrington Driver Crowned 1961 Harness Season Champion

Robert Farrington of Richwood is named top harness driver after 839 drives yielding 201 wins 125 seconds and 125 thirds. His Farrington Stable trained by Bob and his father Louie features mainly inexpensive horses yet earned $193 113 in 1961. Farringtons own 40 horses with 25 in training near Richwood and others at Kenton fairgrounds.

Baptist Circle Meets in Basement at First Baptist Church

The Ann Judson Circle met in the church basement on November 29. Vice chair Doris Ransome opened and led devotions. The group planned a Christmas party for patients at Magnetic Springs Polio Foundation with Barbara Holcomb arranging child care. Mrs Twining served refreshments.

Clever Curly a black stallion owned by Vernon Wood was shot in the neck by a rifle slug Friday morning while being jogged with another horse driven by Carl DeBolt. Chief of Police Davis investigates. one man questioned, no arrest. The wound near the windpipe caused nose bleeding. The horse is described as improving.

Annual Activity Schedule Announced by Union Soil District

The Union Soil Conservation District Supervisors approved next year plans and two basic soil and water conservation schemes at their November 28 meeting 1961. Activities include a soy bean clinic in March a Farm Pond Safety Demonstration in June drive yourself tours for chemical weed control and cover crops and a Test Plots tour at Ohio State University. Basic plans cover Joe Wasserbeck 172 acres in Jackson township and Clarence Durban 464 acres in Darby township plus a 486 acre Millcreek township watershed drainage request.

Mother of Richwood Lady Dies In Hospital

Funeral services were held for Mrs. Opha Freeman 82 at Hill's Funeral Home Westerville. She died in San Antonio Hospital after a week long illness. Born January 13 1879 she lived mainly in Delaware and Franklin counties and resided in Westerville for forty years. She was married to M Edson Freeman in 1900. Surviving are daughter Mrs Charles Mutter of near Richwood daughter Mrs S H Kershner of Upland Indiana son Paul of Dallas Texas eight grandchildren ten great grandchildren two sisters and one brother.

A Richwood F F A meeting in November initiated members from Greenhand to Chapter Farmers. Oil Stove Explosion Damages Pharisburg Trailer

Alfred Hoffman of Pharisburg saw his house trailer damaged by an oil heating stove explosion last Friday night around 10 in the evening. The structure suffered about 400 dollars in damage. no one was inside at the time. Several teddy bears used in Mr. Hoffman's business were also damaged.

Charles Berry's New Convertible Wrecked

Charles Berry aged 20 of Route 2 Richwood bought a 1962 convertible last Wednesday night. The car failed to turn at a curve on Ohio 739 east of Essex and wrecked, tearing 160 feet of farm fence and snapping a utility pole. Berry was unhurt. deputy said wheels would not turn. Accident occurred about 1 40 a m.

Santa’s Dec 22 Trip and Downtown Christmas Contest

Santa will visit Richwood on December 22 and a downtown Christmas tree will be decorated with a community treat line. Prizes of 25 15 and 10 dollars awarded for best decorating by the Richwood Corporation. Judges plan to visit December 17 to 23, exact time to be announced. Do It Day Slogan Urges Union County TB Drive

The 1961 Christmas Seal Gift Day is urged by H W Carr president of TB and Health Action in Union to mail donations. Funds support an ongoing year program of X rays and early detection tests for tuberculosis, with research funds increasing to fight infection and develop vaccines. The campaign calls for wholehearted support to eradicate TB in Union County.

Christmas Meeting At Skidmore’s Circle

The December Cheerio Circle of Daughters met in Skidmore’s home on South Street with Mrs. Skidmore presiding. Mrs Mildred Smith gave a Christmas display of slides by Lucy Haywood and education staff.
