Richwood Fair Opens with Record Entries and Festivities

The 1968 Richwood Fair kicks off Friday at 9 a.m. with judging for dairy cattle beef cattle swine sheep and fat lambs. Entries total the largest ever, with events including Kid's Day harvests, a flea market, harness racing, and a busy four day program featuring music auctions and a grand finale.

Wayne Gilliland of Columbus purchases Richwood Electric Supply on N Fulton Street. Former owner Leland Kelly will join brothers Serge and Thorborne at Richwood Electric Inc. Lee Kelly to run Engineering in Marion firm. Gilliland also owns Crawford Heating and Cooling. 45 years in business. plans to keep staff and add service men. Community welcomes new owner.

4-H Girls Win Honors At Ohio State Fair

Four Union County girls won Outstanding of the Day in Home Economics Demonstrations at the Ohio State Fair on August 22. Cyndi Elliott led with the first 4-H demonstration making a toy box. Ellen Dettra placed second in Safety Speaking earning a $50 Bond. Marcia Phelps also earned Outstanding in Agricultural Demonstration. Eleven counties competed across morning and afternoon sessions.

Richwood VFD Debuts Water Tank Truck on Fire Run

The Richwood Volunteer Fire Dept. sent its new water tank truck on its first run last Tuesday afternoon when an auto caught fire on St. Rt. 739 near West Jackson. The new vehicle operated smoothly, contrasting with the old tank truck's slow chugging.

Wood resident leads 2750th ABW shop to 99 percent self sufficiency

A Wood resident completed a demanding assignment by integrating new staff into the shop systems while maintaining the 2750th Air Base Wing Material Division Field Maintenance Section self sufficiency rate at 99 percent despite a heavy workload.

Genitols Edge By Upjohns In Coaches Game

Genitols beat Upjohns 6 to 5 in a Little League softball coaches game at Richwood ball diamond. Umpires were Norma Ormerold Dorothy Patterson Kay Coder and Judy Elliott. Player rosters include Genitols I Markley D Terry J Hoffman and others with Upjohns J Wiley J Decker B Cheney M Phelps G Jolliff R Miller and more. About 235 area players completed the season as trophies plaques and certificates were awarded to top teams and sponsors.

North Union district moves to four elementary centers Byhalia Jackson Claibourne and Leesburg Magnetic serving grades one through six. Kindergarten at Byhalia and Claibourne with Magnetic and Jackson pupils. School day runs 9 00 to 3 40 with rotating principal John W Merriman handling Claibourne 1 00 to 4 00 each day.

The Richwood Junior Fair Board holds work sessions on August 20 27 and 28 cleaning the secretary's office building gates for the livestock sale hauling sawdust for the show ring spreading gravel at watering stations and preparing for the August 29 start of the fair Entries judging booths and contests are planned across Friday Saturday and Monday with a modeling contest foods revue and awards program culminating in the September 2 livestock sale Four days of activity wrap up months of preparation before next year plans begin for livestock exhibits 4 H booths and livestock sale across the fair weekend

North Union Board Sets Two Levies For November Ballot

The North Union Board of Education announced two operating levies for November. A renewal of 5.0 mills expires 1968 plus a 29 mill request to cover rising education costs. Open houses for the new high school are planned September 15 and October 20 with a dedication program.

Village Council Lays Out Tax and Sewer Plans

The village unanimously approves first reading of a five dollar motor vehicle license tax and schedules a second reading for Sept. 9. Mayor Lee Hagenlocker announces a sewer license effective until Dec. 15. A Sept. 9 meeting with the Board of Public Affairs will hear engineering reports on sewer and water systems. Sidewalk compliance for North Union High School nears completion with remaining property owner notices to fund sidewalk construction via the tax duplicate. Flasher light poles at the new high school are installed. The council orders weed removal on overgrown vacant lots including Anderson Car Wash and a pro trailer court, with the violators liable for cleanup costs if not complied with.
