C. A. Larcomb and Jonathan Fryman ran a foot race on West Bla Grove Street last Saturday afternoon. The Frisky Farmer defeated the Grocer by about five rods. Next race, Charlie should train for a few weeks.

A Sad Affair Involving Hancock McAllister Tragedy Near Richwood

George W. Hancock of Licking County faced a fatal quarrel with his father in law Jesse McAllister after returning home to his Richwood residence. The altercation escalated with a knife threat and thrown objects before McAllister died of heart failure. A post mortem was conducted by Drs Swisher and White, with inquest arranged by Judge Jolliff. Hancock was jailed on $1000 bail and held as legal proceedings began. Coroner Swisher later issued a formal report on the death.

Coroner's Verdict On Union County Death

The coroner's report states death was caused by disease of the heart and rupture of a blood vessel, superinduced by excitement and shock, following an assault by Geo. W. Wancock. Coroner A. B. Swisher of Union County signs the verdict.

Funeral Held for Deceased in Late Home

Rev C W Bogle officiated at the funeral held Monday afternoon. Remains viewed by a large crowd and buried in Claibourne cemetery. McAllister born 1820 in Adams County Pa came to Ohio 1833 moved to Delaware then Union County about 18 years ago. Married Emily Gildersmith in 1850. three children born, two living Cordy McAllister and Mrs Hancock. Geo Hancock, about 40, father of two boys, native of Kirkersville Licking County, long resident here. The affair is a sad topic locally.

Strike order in Cleveland narrows immediate impact

The Aug 7 report says Shaffer's strike order will affect few in Cleveland as the steel trust controls Newburgh lake mills. Only a handful of mills show thorough worker organization, including the hoop and various pipe mills and Crescent Tin Plate, with about 150 steel workers and about 80 percent at Crescent responding. organizers target Lorain mills next.

Attorney General Issues Circular to Stop Stream Pollution

Columbus Ohio August 7 Attorney General Sheets issued a circular letter directing Highland Champaign and Stark counties prosecutors to take immediate action to prevent pollution of streams by strawboard works distilleries and other manufactories. Com plaints say fish in local streams are being killed by the polluted water and the judge aims to halt it.

Death in Ohio Farm Haymow Mystifies Residents

Michael Shone, 47, a farmer from Hamilton Ohio, was found dead in a haymow on Jacob Rinehart’s farm. No wounds or violence were evident. Some speculate an overdose of laudanum, but no drug was found. Neighbors recall his calm, temperate nature and mystery remains.

Explosion at National Steel plant injures seven workers

Breabenville, C. Aug. 7. An explosion in a hot air main at the National Steel Co. plant at Mingo Junction injures seven bricklayers. Thomas Overman of Bridgeport, O., dies from injuries. Harry Grouch of Mingo Junction and five others including John Bishop, Edward Hanlon, John Fisher, and Alexander Henry suffer cuts and scalds.

Interurban dreams in speed race to connect Cleveland and Cincinnati

Ma Fred Green of the Dayton Springfield Urbana Electric Railway Co spoke in Springfield on August 5 of major interurban growth. He cited planned electrified passenger service with speed rivaling steam trains and freight by steam roads, after acquiring the Dayton Lebanon and Cincinnati Kanon & Northern lines. He promised ten years of work ahead and five years more to complete the plan.

Youngstown Ohio August 5 Superintendent Milton Coombs of the American Steel Hoop Co mills said no orders have come from company officers to start plants. Unless the Federation of Labor calls out blast furnace workers for iron supply to United States Steel there will be no change. Reports of a strike extending to Republic Iron and Steel mills are unfounded as an absolute one year scale agreement was signed.

Suicidal death of Miss Emma Tizzard in town well

Miss Emma Tizzard daughter of the late W. B. Tizzard, prominent in the town's early history, drowned herself by jumping into a well at 5 o'clock Tuesday morning. She was a noted local figure and part of a well known family.

A Pinkerton detective pursuing the Milan bank robbery case reports three suspects have been found in Ottawa county jail. They were arrested here about a week ago on charges of house breaking and horse stealing.

Grand Bay Area Gold Robbery Stuns San Francisco

The Sel Smelting and Lead Co vault at Selby works near San Francisco was tunneled into and robbed of about 1,200 pounds of gold bullion worth $200,000. Thieves, likely skilled mechanics, loaded the gold into a boat and escaped in fog after fastening the vault door from the inside. Four gold bricks, each nearly 1,200 ounces, were taken along with other crude gold pieces.

Record Flood Devastates Christiansburg Area

A historic multi day flood overwhelmed Christiansburg Virginia from Sunday night to Tuesday morning. The Norfolk and Western line between Christiansburg and Bedford washed out in multiple spots stopping train service. Waterways including Little and New rivers rose above May levels, damaging crops and fences. A mill owned by S G Palmer and Son on Mill Creek was swept away by the surge.

Negro Raymond Ross Convicted in 40 Minute Trial

In Atlanta Raymond Ross, a Black man, was guarded by three militia companies called by Governor Candler for protection. He was taken to Canton to stand trial, convicted in 40 minutes, and sentenced to be hanged on August 27. He was returned to Atlanta jail for safe keeping.

Startling Plot Targets Edison Plant in Cincinnati

Details surface of a plot to wreck the Edison Electric Co plant in Cincinnati on Saturday night. An engineer found boilers starved of water and water mains shut off on Plum and Charles streets. The plant shut down for about thirty minutes, plunging the city into darkness. A discharged employee is suspected.

Nitro glycerine wagon explosion near Bowling Green Ohio

A stock wagon with 800 quarts of nitroglycerine exploded one and a half miles southwest of Bowling Green as it crossed the C H D railroad. Driver Will Radaugh of Hercules Torpedo Co. died. the team and wagon were blown to atoms. A nearby house was riddled. The train stopped just before the blast. Mrs Teal and her two sons escaped alive.

Shootings at Saloon Endangers Five in Hamilton

In Hamilton Ohio at midnight William Winterbeck tried to buy beer then returned with a double barreled shotgun and with Skinny Vaughn fired into a crowded saloon. Five men were badly hurt including Frank Scheben who lost part of his arm. Winterbeck and Vaughn fled.

Two Killed in Lawton Highway Robberies In 24 Hours

Lawton Oklahoma reports two highwaymen killings and a serious wounding within a day. Irwin Rogers was shot dead while a party near town resisted. Nine prairie schooners were robbed near Rush Springs. three thieves on thoroughbred horses escaped after killing a youth and wounding another.

The Philippine War Captures and Surrenders Update

The war department released a new Philippine conflict tally covering May 10 to June 18, 1901. Within those dates eight officers and 352 insurgent men were captured and 161 officers and 2,440 men surrendered, bringing total captures and surrenders to 41,029 by June 18. Additional captures include 113 rifles and 1,000 rifles surrendered, plus 7,530 rounds of ammunition and one cannon.

Milwaukee Aug 7 W C Davis fourth vice president of the Amalgamated Association says if Shaffer's strike order takes effect 150000 members will stop work after Aug 10. Chicago August 7 union molders paraded the streets after employers refused to pay $4 a day. The same employers later voted to replace them with non-union workers at $4.50 to $4.75 daily. Kinney Family Head East for Knox County Visit

Emmett Kinney and family from the southwest of town left this morning for Knox County to visit Mr. and Mrs. David Melick, former Kinney neighbors. Mrs. W S Burgoon took train 8 to Jamestown New York to visit A A Gould and family before going to Buffalo for the Pan American exposition. Her absence is planned for about ten days. The infant daughter of Mrs Amelia Malone died last Friday after a two week illness. The child was just over a year old. Funeral services were held Sunday at 3 PM at the Colored Baptist church and interment followed at Bethlehem.
