Richwood Fair Set to Open With New Attractions

The 48th annual Richwood Fair runs August 6 to 9 featuring Ripley’s Believe It or Not show with 100 performers and $75,000 in gear. Night events include saddle horse shows PTA programs and Lone Star Ranger Band acts. Harness racing starts each of the three days led by H H Hartman with strong entries expected.

Wells Family Reunion at Magnetic Springs

The 18th Wells family reunion gathered about 125 guests at Elias Askins home near Magnetic Springs. A self serve pot luck lunch followed. Afternoon program featured songs led by David Neal, prayers, multiple duets and solos, and a Central Methodist male quartet. Frances Robinson elected president. Irene Ritchie re-elected secretary treasurer. Margaret Clevenger chair of the program committee.

Hostesses For Worthy Matrons Of 1933

Mrs Claude Swartz Mrs Roy Le Masters and Mrs S R Sanders hosted the 1933 Worthy Matrons OES eleventh district last Friday. A fine picnic dinner was enjoyed on the lawn at the S R Sanders home with social time and several contests in the afternoon.

Rural Mail Box Improvement Week Urges Better Posts and Boxes

The post office designates the week starting August 1 as Rural Mail Box Improvement Week and directs postmasters to have rural carriers seek patron cooperation in improving mailbox equipment. It urges straight posts, proper height, good repair, white paint, and clear approaches with stone or gravel to keep routes accessible and enhance service.

Saddle Horse Show Planned at Richwood Fair

Richwood Fair Board announces an amateur Saddle Horse Show on August 7 and 8 at 7 15 p m. Open to Union County residents with classes for riders under 15, model horses, three gaited, horsemanship, fine harness, and farm hack. Purse of 5 3 2 dollars plus ribbons. Magnetic Merry Maids Meeting Notes and Greenfield Visit

The Magnetic Merry Maids held a gathering at the Magnetic school house on July 29. Attendees reported an enjoyable camp and discussed a tour to Greenfield Village in Greenfield, Michigan, on July 30. York Girl Weds Sunday at Home in York Center

Miss Lura Wyeth of York Center married Robert Poling of Columbus in a Sunday ceremony at the Wyeth home attended by about 55 relatives. The couple exchanged vows with Rev. Horace Sheldon officiating, and plan a 10 day honeymoon to the lakes of northern Michigan.

Annual Jolliff Reunion At Cramer Home Near West Mansfield

The Jolliff family reunion gathering was held Sunday at Clyde Cramer’s home near West Mansfield with attendees from Marion Columbus Richwood Byhalia Stoutsville and Marysville. A noon basket dinner preceded a business meeting and elections for 1941 officers. A future reunion is set for the last Sunday in July 1941 at Arthur Hall’s nearby Pharisburg home.

Richwood Softball Team Defeated at Belle Center

The Richwood softball squad traveled to Belle Center last Monday and fell behind 3 to 1 after the first inning. They aimed for their 30th win but dropped to their 8th loss as the home team Belle Center, noted as a rabid softball town, held on. Battery details list Kirby Millington Leffler and James.

Locals Travel for Weekend Softball Showdowns

This Friday night the local softball team travels to West Liberty for a night game and on Sunday plays the Marion Merchants in Marion. The Merchants have won 24 games this season while losing six.

Church League Disbanded Amid Poor Attendance

The church league ends for the year due to low participation with teams often failing to show up for scheduled games. Officials say only a few players attended and many teams did not field a full lineup.

Union County reports 3798 school age children, down from 3892 in 1939 by 94. Of these, 23 are handicapped including blindness and other disabilities. Miss Jeanne Winter presented Jo Ann Kyle in a piano recital at the Winter home on South Franklin Street last Wednesday evening. Former Richwood Boys Land Huge Gulf Jew Fish

Mr and Mrs Owen Webb and family with Mrs Webb's mother Mrs Earl Dirst spent two weeks visiting southern points then visited Millard Perry and Ralph Dirst of Port Arthur Texas While fishing in the Gulf of Mexico they landed a 285 lb Jew fish The fight lasted six hours to bring it to safety and it is the largest caught at that location.

Mrs Eugene Mead Stricken at Dayton

W D Harmon received a telegram Wednesday morning informing him of the death of his sister Mrs Eugene Mead of Dayton. She had been in poor health for several years and was overcome with the heat last Thursday. Mr Harmon and Mr Margaret Matteson visited Dayton Tuesday and found her very low. She had many friends in this vicinity visiting here many times.

Richwood Native Harry Mulrow Dies of Heart Attack

Richwood born Harry Michael Mulrow a 38 year old Marion brakeman for the Erie railroad died of a heart attack Saturday while en route from Marion to Kent. He was born April 9 1902 in Richwood and survived by his widow his mother two steps and two sisters. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the M H Gunder Sons Funeral home in Marion.

The Union County schools hired several new teachers this week. Ruth Skinner of Ohio joins Allen Rural as Mathematics Latin and English teacher. Paul A Tallman from West Mansfield takes 5th and 6th grades at Allen Rural after Washington Rural 7th and 8th grade post was eliminated. Selma Ferne Malott of Hamersville becomes 1st and 2nd grade teacher at Allen Rural. Catharine Jane Trent of Leesburg will teach English Latin and Commercial studies at Dover Rural after graduating from Ohio State. Marvin Willis Fogt of Sidney, Capital University graduate, becomes music teacher for Claibourne Richwood.
