Fraternities prepare for a formal three day rushing period beginning tomorrow September 26 at 8 P.M. and ending Monday at 12 P.M. Rush rules prohibit pledge talks after the season ends and ban spending on rushes during school opening to close of rush. Bids withdrawn after 6 P.M. on closing day require a 30 day wait to extend.
Jo Ann Kent of Arlington Virginia was elected junior president to fill a vacancy left by Jane Meade. Hilda Kirby of Richmond becomes vice president and Margaret Lockwood advances to treasurer. Kent has varsity basketball and track experience and held YWCA secretary duties.
Richmond College Law School held a student government smoker in the Columbia Building to welcome the first year class. J Vaughan Gary praised Richmond as a rising education center and urged use of courts as a legal clinic. Lewis Ames introduced President Boatwright who invited students to utilize campus facilities. Mac Pitt from the Athletic Department extended a welcome.
Dr Douglas Freeman editor of The News Leader delivered the principal address as the University of Richmond marked its 105th year. Rev Theodore F Adams welcomed new students and six college deans reported growth from twelve scholars and one teacher to a multi college university with nine buildings and eighty teachers. Enrollment exceeded 400 freshmen with a redecorated chapel an organ and a new gymnasium for Westhampton College.
During matriculation week the Y M C A ran a book exchange that moved forty books and drew both new and returning students. The information table in the hall served many anxious newcomers, with Dorsey Ford urging men to visit the Y between classes for magazines and a headquarters.
Upperclassmen laugh at freshmen as ratting rules are evaded and party life overwhelms during rushing season. Freshmen anticipate serenely a week of guidance deceit, late nights, and chores, while seniors describe the so called fun as a goat’s life.
In Memphis, Southwestern College enforces parking rules by deflating tires of cars left in prohibited zones. Signs warn drivers of penalties, and officials report violations nearly eliminated.
University of Richmond students prepare a 7 15 p m rally in Millhiser Gymnasium to celebrate a potential victory. Head cheer leader Bernard Gilman predicts a gala evening with speeches by J Vaughan Gary and Coach Thistlethwaite. Captain Mike West will introduce the varsity football squad and deliver a short address.
Richmond College sophomores plan a class meeting Tuesday September 29 in the Playhouse. George George, the class president, announced the gathering.
The Richmond Collegian invites applicants for advertising or circulation work with David Bear assistant business manager in Office A Playhouse at 12 80 P M Monday September 28. No prior experience needed and all applicants will receive tryouts.
Applications for all degrees must be filed at the dean's office by Saturday, September 26, according to university notices.
Westhampton College Government Association held a special meeting to abolish the Judiciary Board and replace it with a temporary Honor Council led by Nancy Chappell. The council includes four seniors and one junior and will handle Honor System enforcement and related duties with two house presidents granting permits. New officers Carolyn Fraser, Olive Messer, Julia McClure, and Alice Pownell were elected to key posts.
Freshman activity week featured the Philologians in Room R with Charles Turner discussing Ideals and Hopes for the Year and John Pastore on How to Increase Membership. Mu Sigma Rho in Room 1 led by Roger Page spoke as did the S. C. Mitchell Society at the T. C. Williams Law School with president David M. Bear addressing the gathering.
