Freshman Story Contest Ties At Westhampton

Two students tied for first in the Westhampton Freshman Short Story Contest held Monday May 17. Margaret Haley and Catherine Branch won for Acceptance and The White Wig. Eugenia Riddick and Evelyn Coleman tied for second with And Even the Blue Jay Had to Laugh and Stone.

Emroch and Martin Win In Mu Sigma Rho Contests

Emanuel Emroch and Ralph Martin won the oratorical and declaimer's contests held last Monday night among Mu Sigma Rho Literary Society members. Emroch spoke on A Physic Continuity and Martin on The New Republic, with medals to be awarded at Commencement.

Elinor Physioc Heads Westhampton Writers Club

Elinor Physioc was chosen president of the Westhampton Writers Club at a regular meeting. She has shown marked ability as a writer and excelled in the advanced course in English composition. Elizabeth Jones was elected vice president and secretary. Virginia McDaniel, Jean McCarty, and Louise Gayle were elected as new members for their interest and capability in writing.

Dark Chrystal Wins News Leader Contest

Margaret Knight of Westhampton wins first prize of one hundred dollars for Dark Chrystal a one act play entered in the News Leader contest. The final five included University of Richmond students Leslie L. Jones and Harry M. Waldron. Knight previously won for Three Bags of Corn in the 1925 Freshman Short Story contest.

Picture Day Planned for Next Year’s Web Annual

A traveling photographer from White Studio New York City will take student portraits on campus for next year’s Web. He will be present two to three days and all eligible men must have pictures taken. Four poses per student replace two. Fifty one campus scenes for the 1927 Web have been captured plus other progress noted by editor M P Patterson.

Mrs A A Sizer resigns as manager of the University of Richmond cafeteria with services ending June 1. Since arriving in February 1925 she has efficiently led the department, delivering wholesome food options for students.

Philologians to Elect Officers for Fall Term

The Philologian Literary Society will hold its regular weekly meeting Monday night at 7 15 asking members to elect officers for the fall term of the 1926 27 session. Elections will cover president vice president secretary and treasurer for the first term and a decision will be made on electing presidents for additional terms as proposed last week.

University of Richmond to Begin Waiting Room Construction

University authorities sign a 2500 contract to build a Gothic waiting room this week. The blockstone structure will measure twenty six by fourteen and a half by twenty two feet with brick and stone walls and white limestone blocks bearing the university name. The cornerstone is planned before Commencement.

Suspension of Medical Services During Examination Period

Regular offices of the college infirmary will be suspended during the examination period. For medical attention students should go to D-12 Jeter or call R. B. Nichols at the Kappa Sigma House.

The University of Richmond Spider Web is expected to appear June 1, per business manager Roland W. Payne. Further notices on hours and room locations will be released in the next issue.

Third Volume of The Debater Issued Shortly

Volume three of The Debater, the University of Richmond forensic teams debates and orations, will be issued soon and placed in the library for reference. The Debater began with Volume 1 at the end of 1922-23, Volume 2 appeared last year, and Volume 3 will be published under A Stephan Stepanian.

Westhampton Students Take Part in Vespers

Westhampton College hosted a Sunday night vesper service featuring undergraduate performers. Mary Payne sang solo with Mary Louise McGlathlin on piano, the choir performed an anthem Unfold Ye Portals, and a sextet finale Lift Thine Eyes included Florence Booker Culley James Georgia Mae Crews Catherine Lett Glenna James and Ruth Bishop.

Goode to Teach English at University of North Carolina Summer School

Dr. C. T. Goode head of the English department at the University of Richmond will join the University of North Carolina summer school faculty. He will supervise graduate work in English during the program.

Vacation School 10 Opens June 14 for Six Weeks

Summer session starts Monday June 14 and runs six weeks to July 24 with full credit. It targets pre medical students and others seeking extra credits, offering regular courses with science emphasis.
