Mortar Board Taps Five For Leadership Roles In Ceremony

The local Mortar Board chapter tapped five Junior Class members Tuesday in the Greek Theatre ceremony. Kathryn Connor Elizabeth Cornwell Luise Cowherd Mary Ellen Stephenson and Florence Marston were named by the chapter to uphold leadership scholarship and service standards with Marston elected president for 1996 96.

Hundston Cary to Speak on Manual Training for Leisure Time

Hundston Cary prominent Virginia author and political figure will speak at Convocation today on manual training for leisure time. He is running for State Senate and recently published Old Home Crafts and New Economica advocating revival of Virginia crafts to aid rural rehabilitation.

Faculty Mush-ball Tilt Promises Lighthearted Campus Clash

The faculty vows a humorous May 28 mush-ball match against students led by Captain Hackley. Loman Opens Summer Society Dance at Harlequin

Ted Loman and his orchestra headline a Harlequin Club dance at the Phi Gamma Delta house on May 18 with original decorations and chaperones Mrs Woodward and Mrs Gordon. The Harlequin Club elected new officers Gaius Diggs Jr president E Christy Gannett vice president Guthrie Brown and Ranny Tabb secretaries treasurer. Summer session at the University of Richmond opens June 17 for nine weeks with biology chemistry physics and other courses plus a coaching school run by local college coaches.

YWCA Cabinet Hosts Social Picnic and Plan Day

The YWCA cabinet held a social picnic for successors with members of both cabinets and advisor Miss Lough. They traveled from Seathampton to Ridge for supper at Mr Parks cabin, built a fire and sang camp songs.

Southern Comic to Debut at University Campus This Fall

The Southern Comic, official VIPA publication, will debut on campus in September with a University of Richmond issue. Wanted are car toon and feature submissions coordinated by B Guthrie Brown. Copies cost fifteen cents. Richmond Collegian sponsors seven copies on sale locally.

Modernism Theme Highlights June 8 Richard III Preview

The cast for Richard III prepares for a June 8 presentation with a final lineup led by Miss Emily Brown. Westhampton seniors, including Jacquelin Johnston and Beverly Britton, headline a large ensemble in roles from Lady Anne to Queen Elizabeth. The 1935 Web on Modernism debuts on campus Monday, featuring a Hall of Fame vote and a merged Spider Towen Legend section, with copies available Monday for paid final fees and June 10 for others.

Peck Heads University Band as Student Leader at Richmond

Wilbur Peck elected student leader of the University Band at a campus meeting. Paul Watlington named business manager. Donahue praised for leading the band with no university expense. A new librarian post created to ease student leader duties. Charles Ridgway succeeds Peck as conductor with the Spider Band showing progress. Descriptive Astronomy Course Planned at Westpton College

Westpton College announces a Descriptive Astronomy course for the 1085-1988 session led by Dr. Harris. The class meets one hour weekly for one credit per semester with Math 1-2 as the prerequisite. Morning and night sessions will be offered as schedules permit.

Richmond College Glee Club Concert Delights Audience

The Richmond College Glee Club staged a May 11 performance of Romeo and Juliet at the Luther H. Jenking Greek Theatre. Fred Laughan as Romeo and Frank Nunnally as Juliet led a strong cast with Sam Babby, Stuart Ullman, Ed Canada, Carrington Paulette, and Curtis Haug in major roles. The first half featured choral songs by the whole group, with Waverly Barbe's piano interludes drawing applause. The Spider Quartet Laughon Bagby Robertson and Peck delivered The Rosary and Pale Moon to enthusiastic acclaim, concluding the season with plans for a May 26 banquet and upcoming tours.
