Co-ord Gym Plans Near Completion For Center

Plans for combining the Social Center with the Physical Education Building by Garnen Johnson and Wright will go to the Board of Trustees June 10. The project costs must stay under 160000 with 56000 raised by alumni and the remaining funds hoped as a loan from the Federal Emergency Council. Dr Boatwright sought a loan on March 10 1936 and received a letter citing Executive Order 7034 and review by the Federal Emergency Administration of Public Works. Westhampton College design preserves exterior style and features a formal lobby, reception space, and a kitchen adjoining unit.

Hallet Lands Achievements In College Government

Miss Anna Hallett reviews the 84-85 college year noting progress in disciplinary procedures toward flexible enforcement and honor code focus. The Messenger joint issue by Richmond and Northampton Colleges expands, with plans for an Editorial Board and use of remaining funds for student meeting rooms in the Gymnasium and Student Activities Building. The year sees a service and social program including formal dances and weekly dinners.

Stein says Americans understand Stein better than Europeans

Gertrude Stein notes college students grasp her ideas easily while older people resist preconceived notions. She recently left Havre after a six month U S visit, saying Americans show genuine sophistication though their temperament has been paralyzed by it. In Europe neighbors matter less.

YMCA Cabinet Names Editor For Handbook

Preparations proceed for the 1035-36 Freshman handbook at Richmond College Y M C A. Vernon Kibler announces Stuart Crawford editor in chief Francia Tyndall assistant editor and Herbert Allen business manager. The handbook aids incoming freshmen and will be mailed by September 1 to those enrolled. U R Student Band To Play On Cunarder

Ted Loman and the University of Richmond Collegiates will perform dance music for Cunard White Star Lines liner The Laconia and The Caledonia of Anchor Lines this summer. The group, mostly Richmond College students, sails from New York on June 21 1985 with members Bob Talley Eugene McCaul Wilbur Peck Carleton Stutz and Vernon Richardson among the vocalists.

Senior Day Awards Honor Twelve at Cannon Chapel Exercises

Twelve seniors received special awards at the first Senior Day Exercise in Cannon Chapel on May 22 for three or more letters in major sports. Roger Leverton won a football scoring cap and a cup donated by Lutto Jewelry Co. Others honored include Benjamin Campbell John Diedrich Jack Dobson Louis Elmore Roger Laverton Smithson Morris Thomas Morris Charles Peterson Fillmore Sanford Perry Schulz Frederick Vaughan James West. Spiders Win Final Game 7-0 Over Tarheels

Richmond defeated North Carolina 7-0 at City Stadium in a shutout. Herb Hash pitched brilliantly allowing two hits with twelve strikeouts across a thirty-batter outing. George Lacy Campbell Morris tied the game with an RBI sequence in the fourth, then two more runs scored on errors and hits. Stanley Ciecko was elected to lead the 1986 nine as the team’s first baseman.

There Shall Be No Smoking In Dorm

Ohio State University enforces dorm smoking bans after a large dorm fire. Firefighters found a charred cigarette end at the blaze origin, with the official report attributing the fire to a cigarette blown into the building.

A Beloved Citizen H Herbert Harris of Lynchburg

The Commonwealth May 1935 profile honors H Herbert Harris a leading Virginia business and civic figure born October 1 1860 in Charlottesville. A founder and long time director and president of the Virginia State Chamber of Commerce he also led Lynchburgs Chamber Rotary Club and served on the state Board of Education and city school board. He established Harris Woodson Company in 2001 and has bank and hospital board ties in Lynchburg.

Carolyn Shafer becomes vice president Boo Owens secretary and Jimmy Ricks treasurer. The group’s last production will be Richard III on June 8 in the Greek Theatre with Joseph Holland leading. Orientation Week To Follow Last Year’s Program

Dr. Douglas Southall Freeman editor of The Richmond News Leader won the 1934 Pulitzer Prize for biography for Life of Lee. He called the award a public call to emulate General Lee and noted his personal habits of work and devotion to service.
