Dr. W. Boatwright, president, promotes a two million dollar endowment and building fund for the University of Richmond. Campaigns and publicity will highlight opportunities to invest for better classrooms and facilities, with an outline of current needs and future plans.
With a scholastic average of 83 percent, Kappa Sigma won the first leg of the Interfraternity Council of the University of Richmond scholarship cup. The cup was presented at chapel last Tuesday with Dr. Garnett Ryland presiding and Haynie H. Seay announcing the winner. Dr. Harris urged higher scholarship standards as the cup was awarded.
The Ministerial Association met May 5 and chose officers for next year led by president W. B. Denson and vice president N. R. Green. If Slaughter was named secretary and C. P. Anderson treasurer. The pulpit supply committee will include W. F. Cuthriell Hob Arthur and H. Ashley with W. Vaden as annual representative and T. Eugene West as choirmaster.
Dr Pitt urges students to get vaccinated against smallpox with strong response from Westhampton girls and Richmond College students lagging. The vaccination department will close after Wednesday May 20 and students are urged to act promptly.
A meeting of the Alumni Social Center Building Committee is set for next Tuesday to push a broad campaign for funds to complete the new campus building. chairman Thomas B. Mc Adams and secretary treasurer Dr RE Loving oversee efforts as $10,000 has been raised with another $60,000 goal to meet. The center will house student publications and club activities increasing student interaction.
The Debating and Forensic Council plans to print a future volume titled The Debater containing speeches from intercollegiate debates and contest records of the University of Richmond for the current session. The 1925 edition will be dedicated to Miss Ryland and Miss Throckmorton for their forensic support, with C. H. Robinson as editor following a 1923 Beehler edition.
The Athletic Association will hold elections late next week for four officer posts including baseball and track managers. Wir wil Goode, SGA president, said dates will be posted on campus bulletin boards and candidate names are due by May 19. Many students have shown interest amid expectations of a lively race and traditional campaigning.
The Westhampton English department held the freshman Short Story Contest on Monday evening May 11 in the Blue Room. Margaret Knight won first prize while Louise Weatherby Elinor Physioe Betty Winston Louise Gayle and Helen Covey received honorable mention for their stories read publicly.
G Cary White was unanimously elected president of the local Tau Kappa Alpha chapter at a recent meeting. PF EH Atwill was named vice president and A S Stepanian secretary treasurer. The group expects great achievements in the coming year.
Miss Emily Brown and Miss Virginia Withers of Westhampton College invite the Art and Harlequin clubs to a 4:30 PM program in the Drawing Room. Richmond portraitist Mr. Leeson Everett will share experiences of John Sargeant, recently deceased, with stereopticon slides on French art.
Westhampton College and the University of Richmond faced off in a dual debate last Friday with Emeline Stearns and Mary Louise McGlothlin representing Westhampton in Williamsburg. Jane Sinessey and Margaret Dorsey argued the affirmative, but the four to one decision favored the negative, reflecting the long standing strength of Supreme Court precedents.
Miss Lough professor of history spoke to the Student Industrial Commission at Westhampton College on May 6. She outlined the industrial revolution and labor laws in England as a model for world industry and argued the need for labor legislation. Miss Nixon of the Richmond YWCA sponsored the movement.
Richmond students will attend the University of Richmond and William and Mary baseball contest in Williamsburg next Wednesday. A special train is arranged and classes will be suspended to allow a noon departure. Dean Prince and Dean Keller note Westhampton women may attend by special permission, with many expected to join.
Local Y M C A plans to enlist fifteen University of Richmond representatives for the Blue Ridge Conference in N C from June 16 to 26. T Eugene West Edward H H Pruden and Edward B Willingham of Richmond campus lead the effort with speakers from across the South expected.
The Sophomore Class held an all evening dance at the University Club of Richmond from nine to one, with most members attending. W. H. Atkins L. James Harmanson and TH. Patrick organized the event which reflected strong class spirit and bode well for the coming Junior Class.
