May Day celebration planned for Westhampton College this afternoon near the Rose Arbor. Misses Thelma Phlegar and Margaret Taylor will perform verse and music. May Queen and maid of honor to be announced at ceremony.
Due to conflicting dates the University of Richmond Glee Club moved its local concert from May 2 to May 23. Julian J. Martin serves as temporary president of the music society with James Womble directing the club and Dorothy Rieke and Janet LaRue Wilson joining as featured artists. Proceeds will fund the concert expenses while T Hugene West plans additional concerts. Martin leads the program committee.
Dr. Boatwright, president of the University of Richmond, is in Boston conferring with top architects on plans for a new science building. He will inspect nearby college chemistry labs as part of the study, and work on the project will begin once final contracts and arrangements are secured.
Warren A McNeill of the University of Richmond was selected to compete at Hampden Sidney College tonight in the Virginia Collegiate Orators contest. He won the preliminaries on April 22 over four rivals and faces eight other colleges including Washington and Lee, William and Mary, Randolph-Macon, Emory and Henry, Roanoke, and Hampden Sidney. His topic is In Defense of Elusion, praising love romance religion and intangible life values. McNeill leads campus dramatic and forensic groups and belongs to University players and Tau Kappa Alpha.
Westhampton Colone debaters will meet William and Mary College in their annual contest in May. The pro position asks if Congress should override Supreme Court decisions with a two thirds majority. Westhampton will be represented by Jane Stinessey and Eugenia Edmonson, while Stearns and Mary Louise McGlothin lead the Williamsburg team. The topic echoes La Follette platform prominence and mirrors campus debates across colleges this year.
Elizabeth Taliaferro of Richmond was elected president of the incoming sophomore class at Westhampton College, succeeding Margaret Knight. Sarah Rogers of Newport News was named vice president, Sarah Cudd of Spartanburg secretary, and Marie Lake of Middland treasurer. a cheerleader and hockey captain will be elected later.
It is expected that more students will attend graduation this year as exams end and ceremonies move up a notch. No time elapses between the end of examinations and graduation, and a larger crowd is anticipated.
Local professors announce the third annual meeting of the Virginia Academy of Science, in partnership with the Virginia Section of the American Chemical Society. The Jefferson House will host, with Saturday sessions at the University of Richmond. Talks by University of Richmond faculty include Dr. S C Mitchell, C T Willis, and R B Gaines. Mayor Bright will give the welcome.
Faculty committee and student representatives approved safeguards for lake use this summer. The Student Government Association enshrined enforcement under the honor system and agreed disobedience would be a suspending offence.
In University of Richmond activities masks are shown on stage. Miss Emily Brown presented remarks at the program. Award recipients included Louise Wilkinson Alpha Gordon Margaret Waylor Eugenia Edmondson Susie Blair. Awards were also presented to Warren Chappell Lewyn Davis Meyer Mahaney and George Reediey.
The Philologian Literary Society staged a humorous mock trial for Mu Sigma Rho guests with J. B. Blanks of the Law School credited for the idea. W. R. Pankey, the accused, was absent abroad. his proxy M. L. Ragland stood in as defendant’s stand-in as Judge W. C. Atkins presided and N. R. Green led the Commonwealth’s case.

Tomorrow William and Mary guests the Spider nine in a stadium battle that could decide the state race. The Indians boast a slight edge after beating Bucknell. the Spiders tied Bucknell in a short game. Both sides have beaten Bridgewater as a strong test approaches Richmond from Williamsburg. An improved infield and veteran outfield headline a pitching staff led by Murder Laffelle who has faced Richmond before.
Eugenia Edmondson and Louise Fey returned from the Tenth Annual Conference of the Southern Liter Collegiate Association of Student Governments held April 23-25 at the Florida State College for Women in Tallahassee. Representatives from forty one women's colleges attended. Miss Wille Knight of Converse College presided over the meetings.
Members of the Philatelic Society heard August Dietz, noted Confederate States stamp expert, speak at a Thursday meeting in the Administration Building. President Robert Schnieder led the group and HH. A. Hayden, zoology professor, also addressed the philatelists.
