Debating trial winners named Wilkins Smithers Edwards

Gordon A. Wilkins Herbert J. Smithers and Robert W. Edwards were declared winners in the debating preliminaries held last Wednesday. Judges included Professors Harris Astrop Gaines and Gaines. The question was That the Federal Government Should Control and Operate the Coal Mines.

Spider Band Broadcasts from WRVA Station with Richmond Group

On March 3 the Spider Band with University of Richmond quartet and T Eugene West broadcast from WRVA station run by Larus and Bro Tobacco Co. They performed at 9 40 PM with numbers like Old Red and Blue Far at Sea and Rose Marie. Tenor solos by T S West with Miss Allene Booker on piano. The program included a talk on the University of Richmond and a sequence of band numbers.

Virginia chemists to meet at City Point Inn near Hopewell

Virginia chemists will gather at City Point Inn near Hopewell to hear Hopewell researchers discuss recent developments in manufacturing sulfuric acid. Mr Slaughter of Tubize Artificial Silk Co will speak, followed by Belgian chemist Mr Geo Juer on the history of artificial silk in America. Many Richmond men plan to attend.

Tau Kappa Alpha Fraternity Election Plans Adopted

Tau Kappa Alpha members met on Wednesday to discuss election of new members and eligible candidates. A committee was appointed to extend bids, with elections to be announced in the first part of the term. Continued on Page 4.

Plays Delayed Until April Second at West Hamp ton

Three one act plays scheduled for the Red Cross building at Westhamp ton College have been postponed due to term exams. The new date is expected to be Friday April 2 with SN Night at an tin, The Wonder Hat, and Finale. English V Class of Richmond College conducts the first, with casts from University Players for the other two. George Preedley and Meyer Mahaney direct.

Dr Gaines to Speak at College Chapel Today

Dr RK C Gaines head of mathematics will speak at chapel service today at 11 AM. His topic is Desire as the Urge to Effort. Attendance is open to all students as part of the college chapel program amid other recent talks by college leaders.

University paper to resume April 9 after spring break

The Richmond Collegian will not publish until April 9 before exams. The last issue before the break traditionally substitutes for the edition due on return. the delay reflects a lack of accessible news during the vacation period.

Former U of R Student Holds Revival Services

Rev J S Jones known as Kneeling Evangelist and U of Richmond graduate has led revival meetings at Woodland Heights Baptist Church since March 7 through March 21. He is a singer and preacher who has evangelized across twenty states delivering in Baptist churches and counting 10000 converts. Services begin nightly at 12 45 with choir and orchestra. Inaugural Exercises Set After Spring Holidays

The Student Government Association will hold its inaugural exercises on Monday April 5. W Hiter Atkins will be inaugurated as president with incoming officers A P Newcomb as vice president M S Shockley as secretary and T J Noffsinger as treasurer. Senators elected in 1925 will be replaced by Kincannon Treimer Dillon and Sanford.

University of Richmond Chemistry Building Contract Awarded

The J T Wilson & Company of Richmond won the February 21 bid for 121200 to construct the chemical laboratory at the University of Richmond. The project, with equipment, totals about 145000 and aims for a September 1 completion.

Debate Successful Under English Plan At Westhampton

Westhampton College hosted a debate against Swarthmore College using the English plan. The negative side, led by Virginia McDaniel and Ruby Sieger, defeated the affirmative by Tone Stuessy and Elizabeth Jenkins. The event introduced a new forensic style within the two colleges.

College Exam Schedule Announced By Dean Office

The dean’s office releases the exam timetable with third team classes starting 10 AM on Monday March 29. Term exams for English I begin Saturday March 13 from 2 to 5 PM and run through the following Saturday with unified questions for all sections.

Tharp Elected Y M C A President at Richmond College

Lester Tharpe a junior at Richmond College was elected president of the Y M C A for the coming year at the March 4 meeting. Officers named include Ju m Trimmer as vice president L Jas H Armanson as secretary Lee Gaskins as treasurer and W R Vaiden as secretary of missions. They will be installed at spring term start and serve through next winter term.

Spider Band Requested to Play at Stevensville High

The Spider Band has been asked to perform at Stevensville High School on April 3 1926. J C Swanson director of the local musical organization will decide soon. Raymond E Brann principal of the school who invited them is an alumnus of Richmond College class of 1925.
