University of Richmond Adjusts Winter Exams and Spring Break

The university shifts exam dates and spring vacation for a centennial drive. Winter exams run March 11 to March 17, spring term opens March 18, and spring vacation extends from April 13 to April 20.

Tryouts for One Act Plays Set for Monday Night

Students may audition for three one act plays to be staged at the Red Cross Building on February 18. The drawing room at Westhampton College hosts the 8 o'clock session after the Richmond University players meeting. The exact selections are pending with Rostand’s The Romancers and J J Bell’s Thread o’ Scarlet among works under review.

Richmond Professor Handy Elected Alumni Chapter Secretary-Treasurer

H B Handy professor of English at the University of Richmond was elected secretary treasurer of the Richmond Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha at a Commonwealth Club meeting. He also serves as editor of the Kappa Alpha journal.

Goodbye Old Rat Banquet Ends at Richmond Westhampton

The Board of Trustees at Richmond and Westhampton colleges abolishes the annual Freshmen Sophomore rat banquet after years of friction. The decision ends a long debated tradition and social tension between the two institutions.

Trio of Judges Selected for Short Story Contest

At a Messenger staff meeting H. B. Handy C. L. Dodds and Miss G. W. Landrum were chosen as judges for the Messenger Short Story Contest. The contest is open to University of Richmond students except Writers' Club and Sigma Upsilon members. Entries must not exceed 9 500 words and are due March 1 1927 to editors W. E. Slaughter or Jean MacCarty. Winners receive first and second prizes and their stories will appear in the April Messenger.

Omicron Delta Kappa Appoints Delegate at Richmond Meeting

Epsilon Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa met at the Phi Gamma Delta house on January 20. Francis Taylor or Hector Atkins was appointed as delegate to the D D E conference February 18 19 at the University of Virginia. Most Richmond chapter members are expected to attend. Scholastic problem solutions, especially for freshmen, were discussed and will be revisited February 3.

Richmond College students adopt a condolence resolution to Baylor University after a deadly bus collision involving Baylor basketball team members and their coach en route to Texas University. The crash destroyed the bus and caused extensive damage to the surrounding area.

Elmer Potter Elected to Sigma Upsilon Honorary

Elmer B. Potter a Richmond College sophomore was chosen to join the Sigma Upsilon honorary writers fraternity and will be initiated at the Friday meeting January 28. Potter has been prominent in literary circles at the school and a consistent Messenger contributor earning praise from readers.

Declamation Contest Planned in Chapel February 25

Plans for the annual declamation contest in the college auditorium February 25 are nearing completion. Tau Kappa Alpha leads the event for the first time, inviting 135 high and prep schools with many acceptances. Contestants must report Friday at 2 45 P M to begin at 3 00 P M.

Law School Seeks Rare Law Volumes to Match Standards

The T. C. Williams School of Law launches a drive to obtain English Reports and other rare editions required by the American Association of Law Schools. The university trustees authorize gift or purchase to elevate the library to the level of peer institutions. Richmond lawyers George Bryan and others have already donated to the collection.

Richmond University to Broadcast Radio Program Thursday Night

The Westhampton Glee Club and Spider Chanters will perform on WRVA from Edgeworth Tobacco. About twenty Richmond College students join the Chanters for their second public appearance since January. Directed by Edward D. Naff since September 1926, the program includes pieces like Alma Mater and Moonlight on the Lake.

Y M C A Discussion Highlights Race Mediation Figures

Last night’s Y M C A program featured discussions on outstanding personalities and messages from the Blue Ridge Student Conference led by Francis N. Taylor and J. B. Kincannon.
