University of Richmond to Hold One Act Play Contest

The University Players and The Messenger announce a joint one act prize contest open to all University of Richmond students. Three cash awards of fifteen, ten, and five dollars will be offered. Prize plays will be produced under student direction with authors as co-directors. The date is not set. Complimentary tickets will be available.

Pierpont resigns as Y M C A president

Don Pierpont tendered his resignation as Y M C A president citing lack of time. A general meeting was set for February 5 to ratify the resignation and elect a new president with Louis F. Huffman as committee chair. All student members are urged to attend.

Red Cross Vesper to Feature Rev V Carney Hargroves

Vesper services are set for January 27 at the Red Cross Building from 6 50 to 7 30. The speaker will be Rev V Carney Hargroves pastor of Weatherford Memorial Baptist Church Richmond and a former Richmond College student who studied at Princeton and taught in Kuling China before seminary in Louisville.

Philologians Install New Officers for Next Semester

RK N Sanford was elected President of the Philologian Literary Society for the coming semester. He delivered his inaugural address as outgoing President R P Johnson gave a farewell and urged united support. Winners of Editorial Contest to be Announced Soon

Results of the editorial contest among Richmond College freshmen by Pi Delta Epsilon will be announced in chapel during the first week of next semester. An entire chapel period will be devoted to delivering the award for the best entry. A speaker of note will participate.

Girl's Club Resumes meetings with literary readings

The Y. W. C. A. girls met for the first time after vacation on Thursday night January 17 in the Blue Room. A large attentive group heard a well planned program with selections from Kahlil Gibran read by Mary Hicks and Mahala Hays, while Parthenia Stubbs and Adeline Richardson provided music.

Winners of Tryouts for Northern Debating Team Announced

E. L. Honts won first place in the Northern debating team tryouts held last Friday for the upcoming trip. R. P. Johnson and R. N. Sanford tied for second, with W. H. Bennett and W. H. Corbett tied for alternates. Debates are set with George Washington University Lafayette College and Rutgers College, with travel planned around March 1.

Playreading Group Plans Tentative Season at University

The University Players Playreading Committee proposes a season with three productions two long plays and a series of one act pieces pending dramatics faculty approval. The group hopes to open in March with The Queen Was In the Parlor a three act romance by Noel Coward set in a mythical continental milieu.

Adon A. Yoder of Chicago alumnus class of 1900 in advertising funded a prize for the best oration on The Appreciation of Woodrow Wilson. The Philologian Literary Society receives fifty dollars of the hundred dollar gift for the winner.

Y. W. A. Program Highlights Evening Meeting

Y. W. A. met Sunday after Vespers with Louise Sanford leading devotional exercises on God’s creation and ownership of life. Ruth Hale read selections from Lowell's The Vision of Sir Launfal. Ida Scott played Waters of Minnetonka, and the group closed with the Y. W. A. watchword.

Education Week Opens With Fourfold Emphasis At Richmond

The second annual Christian World Education Conference begins Tuesday February 5 1929 with sessions at the University of Richmond a two day program focusing on International Latin American and Foreign Policy World Program of the Church Industry in the South and Inter Racial Relations. Speakers include Professor William P Maddox Acting Associate Professor at the University of Virginia and Rhodes Scholar 1922 25. Maddox has BA MA from Oxford and is active in political science circles. Industrial topics will be addressed by James Meyers Industrial Secretary of the Commission.

Plans Forming for Virginia Inter-Collegiate Press Convention

Plans are forming for the second annual Convention of the Virginia Inter-Collegiate Press Association to meet February 15 and 16 in Richmond. The Richmond College Chapter of Pi Delta Epsilon sponsors the event. A letter dated January 22 1929 invites Virginia colleges to join, outlining extensive preparations.

Richmond College Glee Club Joins Federation of Virginia Clubs

The Richmond College Glee Club has joined the Federation of Music Clubs of Virginia and will enter the Virginia Concert for men’s glee clubs in Fredericksburg this spring. A club photo will appear soon in the Federation magazine and prospects for the year look brighter than before.
