Miss Emily Brown, a renowned dramatic coach, will launch a bi weekly voice culture class for prospective public speakers. Sessions will be held Saturdays on the Richmond College side of the lake, addressing a demand among students especially future ministers and law undergraduates.
Report from the university notes illness among students. H. J. Riley who fell ill at the Phi Kappa Sigma Convention in New York is improving rapidly and may not yet return. W. C. Atkins, recently ill with chronic appendicitis, is reported in favorable condition after attending the Student Volunteer Convention in Indianapolis.
The University of Richmond will send a three man debating team on a northern tour to debate Johns Hopkins on March 28 and New York University on March 27. The topic is United States entry into the World Court with New York defending for the affirmative and Hopkins undecided. Preparations allow for a potential additional college contest on the trip and must cover both sides of the issue.
The Graduate Nurses Association of Virginia is formulating plans to raise fifty thousand dollars to endow a nursing chair at the University of Virginia. The program involves committees from across the state to enable local women to pursue graduate nursing in Virginia rather than going North.
An impartial committee will inspect lighting in dormitory halls and rooms after a mass meeting of the Student Government Association. The meeting discussed faculty removal of electric fixtures and the committee's report will be submitted to the faculty.
Economics professor Seay develops a new Consular Service course linked to foreign affairs. The program aims to prepare students for examinations for consular posts, requiring history, science, economics, and a modern language. Cooperation with the language department seeks minimal extra work. About thirty five men are sent annually to foreign posts.
The University of Alberta library adds many new books including Gilbreth Fatigue Study Brill Psychoanalysis Thorndike Original Nature of Gross Criminal Psychology Patrick Psychology of Relaxation and more.
H. G. Ferguson, president of the junior class, announced that class of 25 rings will be in the same style as class of 24. The ring setting choice remains with the individual.
Graves Glenwood Clarke, a junior and instructor in short story writing, spoke to the Student Writers' Club at the home of Colonel and Mrs. Le Masurier on January 10. He urged writing with a definite reading audience in mind and noted his ties to the College of William and Mary and the University of Richmond along with his 1914 law degree from T. C. Williams.
The Second Baptist Church Bible class gave $60 and pledged support for Dr. S C Mitchell's plan to raise 4000000 in America from 400000 friends of the league. A committee is named to meet tomorrow at 4 PM to organize a Virginia drive and broaden to other states. Robert P McCracken of the Medical College of Virginia chairs the church committee.
Prominent national figures will speak at the Virginia Association of Colleges annual meeting in Richmond February 15 and 16. Dr F W Boatwright president of the University of Richmond leads plans predicting one of the greatest sessions, with all events at the Jefferson Hotel. Dr F M Simpson of Randolph Macon College participates in coordinating the program.
Members of Westhampton and Richmond Colleges juniors held an oyster roast that marked Derby Day at Richmond College. The Westhampton side hosted the event by the lake with a bonfire and a joint effort by class presidents. An oyster menu accompanied the gathering before a basketball game.
Dr J B Plexotto of the University of California argues that every female student should gain economic independence by working during college. She suggests a five year period of study with several afternoons weekly totaling about fifty hours a month to earn twenty to thirty dollars, enabling financial self sufficiency.
