The Ford Foundation will grant the University of Richmond $455,700 as part of a $500 million package to colleges and hospitals. The funds, largely endowment based, require income in ten years to raise teachers' pay with no principal restrictions.
The Philologian Literary Society accepted a plan to boost unity with a gavel president's key scrapbook and banner. A cost committee was formed, and constitution questions were sent to the constitution committee Dick Brown Joe Jones and Jim Roberts. Officers will be nominated at the January 9 meeting.
About two hundred students from CG Williams attended the Virginia Bar Exam in the House of Delegates chamber on December 13 and 14. Names include William Fitzgerald John G Buck J O Buckner Ward Hark rider Stephen White Walter J Gary and others. The Board of Law Examiners is led by Stuart Carnell William King Sloan Kuykendall Richard Spindle and William Stone. Results will be released in January. A Post Mortem Dance at the Hotel Richmond followed the exam on December 14.
Westhampton College nears a $1000 World University Service drive goal with $145 remaining. Betty Lou Kendall, YWCA president, hopes unpaid pledges bring the total to the target. Contributions accepted after official close. funds aid Korea school supplies and the Foreign Student Fund backing a visiting student, Uma Krumpanidhi.
Ray Ashworth LF.G. president announces all fraternities must drop pledges by 12 30 p m Saturday December 17 to protect the fraternity's first semester average.
English on campus highlights a drive where initial pledges of 640 rise to 855.10 dollars. If goals are met, the larger class may wear bermudas to dinner as a reward while YWCA cabinet and students urge continued giving to aid others.
Milhiser Gymnasium hosted a Christmas party for 88 Baptist Mission Centers children in Richmond. The event featured a University band concert, stories by four volunteers, Santa Claus with gifts, treats, and gym activities, with praise from IFC president Ray Ashworth and Dr. William Trout applauding the effort.
Dr. Wesley Shrader and Mrs. Marjorie Armstrong appointed to Religious Emphasis Week 1956. Shrader opens events February 6 at Gannon Memorial Chapel. Armstrong leads discussion groups on religion and cooperation. Both bring long religious and educational backgrounds and prior involvement with emphasis programs.
The Richmond College Senate presented Christmas gifts last night to the dietitians and workers in the refectory. Student Government president Wilbur Kersey spoke of appreciation for their long and useful service in preparing and serving meals to students.
After Christmas vacation a series of religious book displays will be shown in the Richmond College Library and Westhampton College Reading Room. The displays promote Religious Emphasis Week with themes including basic Christian beliefs, the church, the Bible, and religion in daily life.
Children at the Richmond Detention Home received gifts from Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity at a Christmas party. Girls got cologne and jewelry, boys received billfolds. Ice cream candy and cookies followed a magician’s performance.
Westhampton College seniors celebrate their fourth class birthday on January 6 with a song and high spirits. Refreshments will lead the event and the blue and white cake will display class colors as the group ends with a group singing.
